Harvey Grown
A unique course offering that blends green literature, horticulture, and sustainability.
Who said science and literature aren't related?
Harvey Grown is a unique Upper School elective where students have the unique experience of learning about ecology and literature at the same time!
In Harvey Grown, students read green literature and learn about sustainable gardening and horticulture. They explore the ways that humans can use sustainable practices in the landscape to help support local wildlife and grow their own food. By the end of this course, students have developed an appreciation for nature, increased their knowledge of sustainable gardening principles, and put them into practice. This is an opportunity to help the Earth, support the local wildlife community, and leave a positive and lasting impact on our campus, led by Harvey Grown teacher Carolyn Bean.
Everyone should have knowledge of plants in our environment, how they function, which ones are edible. Gardening is a fundamental life skill.

Each student chooses a spot in the garden on campus and designs and plants it. They learn scientific concepts, play with elements of art and design, and practice their reading, writing, and research skills.

Harvey trusted me and gave me the tools (literally and figuratively) to make this elective happen. I do not think I would have had the same opportunity to pilot a course like this just anywhere. An English teacher teaching horticulture and sustainability? Where would that happen?
It is happening here at Harvey.
