The Pulse is the student newspaper for The Harvey School. It is published six times a year with an online version and each issue is also posted on the website. Students who are involved in producing the paper write all the articles, take photos, and edit both.They also have the opportunity to learn Indesign & Photoshop, and are responsible for the design and layout of the paper. The content of The Pulse includes feature articles, editorials, sports and arts coverage, Middle School news and various student columns. Students work together to decide on features, assign articles and collaborate to meet deadlines. The goal of The Pulse is to be a newspaper that reflects student life within The Harvey School community.
The Avatar is the Upper School magazine for literature and the arts. The staff editors are responsible for promoting the magazine and encouraging students to submit their artwork, photographs, poetry, and short stories. During club meetings, students read and review submissions. They also share and workshop their own writing. This year The Avatar has benefited from the energy and passion of its editorial staff, which strives to increase student contributions, revamp the magazine’s image, and produce two issues per year while maintaining a venue for highlighting student work online.
Harvey Magazine aims to communicate to all of our Harvey family, those who were such a large part of our school’s illustrious past and the students, their families and faculty of the school community today. The magazine’s mission also seeks to connect the two with the over-arching theme of the magazine, a celebration of Harvey then and now. Each issue in the winter and the summer also employs a specific focus or theme with feature articles that highlight both the then and now aspects of the issue’s focus. In addition, each August in our commencement issue, we celebrate our June graduates. Harvey Magazine, under the direction of Communications Director Karen Grazia as editor-in-chief and Sally Breckenridge, Alumni Relations Director as the associate editor, relies on the invaluable contributions of current students, staff, parent leaders, and alumni to help shape each issue and reflect each issue’s focus. Our feature writer explores each theme in greater depth. Our photo images come from many sources, both internally and externally, and serve to enhance the magazine’s layout. The magazine also encourages letters to the editor which the editors will gladly publish with approval from the writer.
