After Harvey I endured four years at St. Mark's, very depressing after the picturesque buildings and countryside at Harvey. The first two years were a breeze, as the Harvey preparation was so good that most of the courses were a review. Found my calling in graphic design upon moving to New York, had my own design studio for 20 years, combining design, photography and writing for annual reports and corporate literature. (The photography skills began at Harvey….I remember buying a used camera from a Harvey student and learning how to use the school's new darkroom.)
Harvey's Motto Scientia et Veritas, knowledge and integrity or knowledge and character, "deep graven on each heart." These words, and what they stood for, were constantly drilled into us 24/7. Leadership. Spirit. Insistence, Example. And they remain a powerful influence in my life. They are a big part of me, just as they must be for so many other Harvey boys. We were trained in timeless core values with which to steer our lives. Building character and values, along with top-flight academic preparation, was what Harvey was all about. Its soul and its mission. Beyond Integrity, we were coached in Determination to do what needed to be done, easy or hard. And a healthy Competitive Spirit. We were also taught Self Reliance and Personal Responsibility, that we alone were responsible and accountable for ourselves and our own performance, good or poor, not someone or something else as is so often the accepted case today. These are the fundamental Life Values which go straight to Character, and they were held High and Unwavering as Harvey's standards for its boys.
