Harvey Girls Capture HVAL Lacrosse Crown
Posted 05/18/2018 01:06PM

Harvey’s girls varsity lacrosse team won its second Housatonic Valley Athletic League championship in program history when the Cavaliers defeated the Wooster Generals Friday, 17-6, to complete a perfect season against league opponents. The Cavaliers, 16-2 overall, finish the season with 12 wins and no losses against HVAL rivals.

Once again Harvey rode to victory on the strength of its high-powered offense and relentless defense, a dynamic combination that helped the Cavaliers win 14 straight games after an early 2-2 start to the season.

Senior captain Sadie Albert had another remarkable game, leading her team with five goals and eight assists. Eighth-grader Ellie Kalman kept up her hot scoring pace with three goals. Junior captain Sofia Scarsella, whose groundball game was outstanding once again, scored two goals and added two assists. Senior Julia Mallon had one of her finest games this year, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Senior Dani Oddo, who dominated on draw controls, contributed two goals and recorded an assist. Freshman Keegan Glucksman whose game is fast and strong and owns the midfield transition, chipped in a goal. Also getting into the scoring column with one goal apiece were seniors Sydney Lunder and Lizzie Kavounas and seventh-graders Emma Galgano and Juliet Jaques. Harvey’s senior goalie Kelly McMorrow was outstanding. She made five saves.

Harvey coach Greg Janos credits the clinching victory to “another full team effort. He added, “We were awesome and came ready to play from the start.”

The coach took some time to acknowledge the contributions of the seniors on the squad. “It was a bittersweet moment when I called a timeout with five minutes left. I wanted to be the first to thank the seniors for a great four years, in fact, Sydney Lunder for six years. I wanted to congratulate them on the championship before they took their home field for the very last time. They won it all as freshmen and again as seniors!”

The coach also tipped his cap to the HVAL runner-up. “Wooster is a fierce competitor who has a very promising future and we look forward to battling them again next year,” said coach Janos.

The Harvey girls won’t have any time to rest on their laurels. They get right back into action today as the No. 2 seed in the opening game of the Class C Invitational Tournament. Harvey faces off at 1 p.m. against No. 3 Hamden Hall. No. 1 seed Ethel Walker School takes on the No. 4 seed Williams at 3 p.m.

If the Cavs win today, they will play for the tournament championship tomorrow, Sunday, at noon against the winner of the matchup between the Walker School and Williams. The tournament is being held at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut.
