Matt Romito '98 Receives Norton Cup
Posted 04/12/2018 02:14PM

Harvey was proud to award the Norton Cup to a very worthy recipient, Matt Romito ‘98, at a ceremony held April 10 at Harvey’s Evarts Rink. Matt Romito was an outstanding hockey player during his years as a Harvey student and has proved to be a consistent unifying force as a hockey alum. He organizes our very well-attended Tuesday evening alumni skates at Evarts Rink, along with family skates, and he is deeply involved with the hockey alumni. As we recognize and thank Matt for all his contributions to Harvey hockey, we also celebrate the recent rink renovations.

Over the last two years, Evarts Rink has seen the completion of a renovated locker room, new upstairs lounge floor coverings and furniture, and improved lighting, to name just a few. We continue to improve the rink to honor its long history and provide a state of the art facility for future Harvey hockey team members, alumni, and community teams and leagues.

The Norton Cup has a long history at Harvey. It is named after Dr. Nathaniel Read Norton, friend of Harvey founder Dr. Herbert Carter, and father to alumnus Nat Norton ‘56. At its inception in the 1920s, up until the 1970s, the cup was given to a Harvey student in recognition of scholastic achievement. After the cup burned in a fire in the 1970s, it was not reinstated until the early 2000s, when Nat Norton replaced the cup and changed its purpose.

The Norton Cup now recognizes an adult who has made a substantial contribution to Harvey hockey. Nat Norton presented Harvey with a new cup, one given to his father, Dr. Norton, on May 24, 1930 (inscribed on the cup) by Dr. Carter, so it holds a very special significance to Harvey and cup recipients alike.

Previous Norton Cup winners are former teachers Rose Baldwin and Gus Stewart (2003); alumnus Bill Mitchell '76 (2004); Tim Halewicz (2008); and current faculty Bruce Osborne (2005), Doug Plaskett (2006),  and Al Morse (2008).
