5 Reasons Why a Wide Choice of Electives Are Essential for Middle and High School Students

We believe that offering a diverse array of electives is more than just adding options to the school course catalog. For students in grades 6-12, the availability of varied elective courses is integral to developing a well-rounded education, fostering adaptability, and encouraging personal growth. Electives create pathways for discovery, skill-building, and holistic development, complementing core academic subjects in preparing students for the complexities of the world.

With more and more schools cutting electives like the arts, music and technology, here are five reasons why a comprehensive elective program is essential for a robust, well-rounded education:

1. EXPLORE & GROW
Electives provide students with the opportunity to explore a range of interests beyond the standard curriculum. By engaging in subjects like the arts, technology, or global studies, middle and high school students can discover new interests, often uncovering talents and skills they may not encounter in traditional academic classes. This process of exploration supports personal growth by allowing students to define their unique strengths and passions. In the long term, these experiences can inspire future academic pursuits, career choices, and lifelong hobbies, ultimately shaping a student’s identity.

2. BUILD THOSE SKILLS
Courses that focus on practical, real-world skills — such as macroeconomics, public speaking, or developmental psychology — are found in The Harvey School's elective program. These subjects equip students with essential life skills, preparing them for the challenges and demands they’ll face beyond their academic years. Through these electives, students gain experience in areas like problem-solving, effective communication, and technological proficiency, which are invaluable both in higher education and the professional sphere.

3. FLEX YOUR BRAIN
Diverse electives encourage students to think beyond traditional subject boundaries, promoting cognitive flexibility — the ability to adapt to new information and think creatively about problem-solving. For example, participating in a music class can enhance spatial-temporal skills, while a robotics course can strengthen logical reasoning and teamwork. Exposure to different types of learning fosters a multidisciplinary approach to thinking, enabling students to make connections across subjects, analyze complex problems, and approach tasks with a broader perspective.

4. OPEN YOUR MIND
Electives in areas like Japanese, European history, or broadcast journalism give students a chance to look beyond their everyday experiences and consider broader perspectives. Delve into different traditions, global challenges, and cultural achievements to better understand the diversity and complexity of the world around us. We want to foster empathy in our students, encourage their curiosity, and help them become more open-minded and well-rounded individuals. This perspective also prepares them to be thoughtful, engaged citizens who can navigate our interconnected world with understanding and respect.

5. SLOW DOWN
Electives often provide a different pace and environment compared to core academic classes, which can help students manage stress and build emotional resilience. Artistic electives, for instance, offer an outlet for self-expression, while athletics and team-based electives can build confidence and foster a sense of belonging. Additionally, electives can offer a space for students to engage in topics they find personally meaningful, which can increase engagement and motivation, contributing positively to their overall educational experience.

ELECTIVES MATTER
A diverse elective program isn’t just about adding variety—it’s a vital part of a holistic education that prepares students for the future. By encouraging exploration, building life skills, cultivating flexibility, and fostering cultural awareness, electives play an essential role in creating a balanced and enriching educational experience. We’re proud to offer a wide range of electives at The Harvey School, helping students dare to be their best in every way.
