A small group of Harvey athletes, competing under the "Cavaliers" moniker amid a large field of the top runners from New York, took to the trails Saturday, Nov. 23, for the final time this season to race in the highly competitive Nike New York Regional Championship Qualifier held at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, New York.
Six Harvey runners performed well on a challenging course in their most competitive meet of the season. Senior Felipe Torres, this year’s HVAL individual champion, was the top Harvey finisher for the boys, placing 73rd out of 366 finishers with a time of 18:20. Sophomore Aidan Garcia, the only other boy competing for Harvey, finished in 20:05.
For the girls, eighth grader Ally Zimmerman, Harvey’s other HVAL individual champion, finished 51st out of 241 runners, completing the course in a respectable 21:48. Other Harvey finishers included seventh grader Ella Adler in 23:40.1, ninth grader Lilah Groff in 24:14.8, and senior team captain Sophia Beldotti in 27:10.2.
Harvey cross country coach Christian Coscio was pleased and proud to see six Cavaliers compete in the Nike meet. “Although this was not a required race, these athletes actively took the initiative and continued training after the season officially ended to prepare for it,” Coach Coscio said. “The course was one of the toughest this season, and the competition was definitely the toughest,” Coach said, adding, “It was a great experience, especially for our younger athletes and a great way to finish out the season.”
All six athletes will take a week off before gearing up with their teammates for the indoor track season after Thanksgiving break.
