Experience, Growth Keys to Success

Former NHL player Colton Orr, a one-time NY Ranger during his 10 years on pro hockey’s biggest stage, returns for his second year as head coach of Harvey’s varsity hockey team. Returning as his assistant is one-time Harvey hockey all-star Cian Keohane, and coming aboard this year as the goal-tending coach is Frankie McClendon, an eight-year pro who plays goalie for the Danbury Hat Tricks of the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Coach Keohane will assist daily practice planning and team systems and Coach McClendon will oversee goaltending development and game preparation, Coach Orr said.

In assessing the team for what they’ve shown him in preseason, Coach Orr sees a group of young players who’ve grown significantly since their 2-11 season last year. “Having gone through a full season together last year, our players now have a stronger understanding of our systems, expectations, and culture,” Coach Orr said. He can’t predict how Year 2 will go in terms of wins and losses, but one thing he’s certain of – the Cavaliers will “compete hard, play with pace, and bring a determined, team-first mindset every day.”

Although the coaching staff has not yet named team captains, Coach Orr is counting on leadership from seniors James Gittleman, Connor Hardy, and Jackson Biel.

Coach Orr likes the depth and versatility of this year’s roster. “Our players are capable of contributing in a variety of roles, allowing us to adapt to different game situations,” Coach Orr said, adding, "There’s a noticeable increase in confidence and maturity, which will be important as we compete in a strong FAA league.”

This year’s team has a strong core of returning players, starting with the Cuddy twins, Dylan and Ryan. A junior forward, Dylan Cuddy was the team’s leading scorer last winter. Coach Orr said, “Dylan sets the tone with his speed, skill, and competitiveness, and consistently drives our offense and competes in all areas of the ice.” Coach Orr said Ryan Cuddy expects to continue to develop into a reliable two-way forward. “Ryan brings speed, energy, and offensive creativity,” Coach Orr said.

Another key returner is sophomore forward Marlin Bieber who, the coach said, “has grown significantly as a player and shows a strong sense for the puck." Coach Orr said, “Marlin makes smart plays with the puck and elevates the players around him making him a valuable part of our forward group.” Freshman forward Brendan Lonergan is expected to contribute to Harvey’s offensive efforts. Coach Orr describes Lonergan as a "high hockey-IQ player with strong offensive instincts and a natural ability to find the back of the net.” Sophomore forward EmileyRose Murphy is also being counted on to contribute offensively. “Emiley brings a tenacious forecheck,” Coach Orr said.

On the defensive side, senior Jackson Biel is the team’s most experienced defenseman. Coach Orr said Biel will provide “leadership, composure, and stability in key moments.”

The team should also get solid goal-tending from both returning junior Patrick Lonergan and newcomer Linus Lindahl, a sophomore international student from Sweden. Coach Orr is happy to see Lonergan return. “Pat was solid for us last season and consistently kept games close, even in situations where we were overmatched,” Coach Orr said, adding, “Pat is an athletic goaltender who never gives up on pucks and plays the position with passion and competitiveness.” The coach is also pleased that Lindahl will see action in front of the net. “Linus brings poise, athleticism, and consistency in net,” Coach Orr said, adding, “He competes at a high level and gives us a chance to win every game.”

Another newcomer is freshman forward Josh Eichinger. “Josh is a big, strong power forward with a good shot who protects the puck extremely well,” Coach Orr said. “He’s hard to play against and adds a physical presence with the hands and skills to put the puck in the net,” the coach said.

The Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) features several strong, experienced teams, and Coach Orr expects the games will be fast and physical. “Every game will demand a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to playing the right way,” Coach Orr said. He’s looking forward to seeing how much the Cavs have improved since last season. “Having a year of experience together and being a year older will make us a tougher team to play against,” he said. “While we remain a young group, I’m looking forward to seeing how we handle strong competition and continue to develop throughout the season,” the coach said, adding, “Our focus will be on daily improvement, competing the right way, and continuing to build the foundation of the Harvey hockey program."
