Varsity Boys Impressive in Home Win

boys varsity soccer action

Harvey’s boys varsity soccer team notched an impressive 6-1 victory at home Friday, Sept. 23, against HVAL rival Forman Lions. With their win, the Cavaliers improved their overall record to three wins against two losses. Led by underclassmen Patrick Cuneo and Jaime Mendoza Sancho, Harvey controlled play throughout the game.

Harvey moved the ball well throughout the beginning of the contest and slid a number of passes through the Forman defense for quality chances. The Lions goalkeeper came up with a number of outstanding saves as Harvey squandered a good number of chances.

In the 14th minute Cuneo gave the Cavs the lead after receiving a pass from Evan Vasile at the top of the penalty area. Cuneo blasted a low, hard shot to the corner of the net. The Lions answered with their own goal in the 23rd minute after Harvey misplayed a ball in the back.

The Cavs continued to push forward using good passing combinations, but once again they were stymied by the Forman goalkeeper. Fortunately, Cuneo had the magic touch on this day. After receiving a pass from Clayton Collum, Cuneo raced into the box and finished again in the 37th minute. The ninth grader would strike again just before the half. Jonah Kass lifted a cross into the box that was headed on by Mendoza Sancho right to Cuneo for his third goal of the half. Harvey led 3-1 at the break.

The Cavs were flat to start the second half, but they slowly began to take control of the game for good. Fifteen minutes into the second half Mendoza Sancho scored his first varsity goal after Kass found him open for a tap-in goal. Later, Cuneo scored his fourth goal after collecting a pass from Kirk Ortega in the midfield and racing into the box where he found the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

Senior Khalil Aguilar finished the scoring when Harvey earned a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Junior Dylan Gueli notched his third straight victory in goal making three saves..

Harvey now stands at 2-0 in the HVAL. The Cavs return to play Tuesday when they travel to take on Watkinson in West Hartford.
