Boys Varsity Tennis - 2025 HVAL CHAMPIONS

Champions Two Times in 2025

Harvey’s boys varsity tennis team had a spectacular finish to the 2025 season as the Cavaliers won the HVAL team championship and then saw their No.1 doubles partners take the doubles crown for the second straight year.

Head Coach Peter Everett and assistant Brandon Paguada guided a team that did not post a sparkling regular season record but saved their best for the very last.We had lost our last regular season game to a team (Christian Heritage) that we shouldn’t have lost to, so we definitely weren’t favored to win,” said Coach Everett. The Cavaliers, who had lost their two regular season matches to the No.1 seeded Wooster by identical 4-3 scores, traveled to Danbury for the league championship match to take on the Generals, hoping the third time was the charm. And it was. Harvey overcame an early deficit to pull out an exciting 4-3 win over Wooster to capture the 2025 HVAL title.

“The strength of our team was at the bottom of our ladder, as our doubles teams came through with all three wins,” Coach Everett said, adding, “Having four-year starter and captain Arav Shah finish off the win with the deciding point made it even sweeter.”

The second top highlight of the season was the doubles championship victory as senior captain Logan Alexander and sophomore Jack Zimmerman capped off the tennis season by keeping Harvey as the league’s reigning champion of doubles. Alexander and Zimmerman formed a strong twosome, concluding the season 6-0 in league matches. For Alexander, it was his second-straight doubles championship.

Coach Everett said the play of the team’s No.1 singles player sophomore Cam Lederer, who had to face all the other team’s top players in each match, was another major highlight of the season. The coach explained, “Cam’s overall record doesn’t stand out as great, but his presence at the top of the ladder was crucial to our maintaining the depth at the bottom,” Coach Everett said.

The coach said the team leadership, entrusted to three senior co-captains, Alexander, Shah, and Jason Dempsey, was also a major factor in contributing to the team’s success. “Our captains, Logan, Arav, and Jason, kept the boys focused and upbeat, and I’m so proud of how we persevered through a surfeit of absences in the final two weeks and still emerged successful,” the coach added.

Three Harvey players, Lederer, Shah, and junior Emmett Cahill, earned HVAL All-League honors. Lederer was also selected All-NEPSAC.

In his final reflection on the season, Coach Everett said, “As we thought would be the case when our season started, our depth of talent was the biggest reason for our success. We had tremendous success in doubles play throughout the year, which was ultimately the reason why we pulled out the league championship.”

At season’s end, coaches Everett and Paguada announced the following players as recipients of special team awards:

MVP: Cameron Lederer

MIP: Jason Dempsey

Coaches Award: Stephen Millette

Clear Signs of Growth

The JV boys grew in their knowledge of the game and in the development of their skills under the guidance of head coach Jeff Seymour and assistant Dylan McDonough. “Our team put a lot of newcomers to tennis onto the court, but our core squad grew in confidence and success over the course of the season,” Coach Seymour said.

The season had its share of highlights of both the team and individual successes. “While our repeat victories over the Forman School were the highlights of the season as a team, those matches also featured Henry He’s win in tiebreakers over a tireless opponent,” Coach Seymour said. He was one of the team’s two captains. He, a junior, shared the mantle of leadership with sophomore Neel Mistri whose performance served as another highlight. “Neel could often outlast the opponent who hit harder or ran faster,” Coach Seymour said., adding, “Always cool under pressure, even when down in games, Neel would keep returning that ball — until he wins the point.”

Coach Seymour also singled out several other players, in particular freshman Jun Lee and junior Marc Bueno. “Jun and Marc both grew tremendously as individuals, honing their craft and competitive edge,” the coach said. He described Jun and Marc as “gentlemanly opponents who also became reliable winners.” Coach Seymour was also pleased to see freshmen Mike Wang and Charlie Bradley play well together. He said, “It was wonderful to see Mike and Charlie grow both as individual competitors and as a doubles team.”

Coach Seymour praised the entire team for the manner in which they played. “I’m proud of the ways our boys could meet their opponents and conduct their matches with cordiality and competitive spirit,” said the coach.

At their team dinner, the two coaches announced the names of the players who were selected as recipients of the special team awards:

MVP: Neel Mistri

MIP: Charlie Bradley

League Doubles Champions … Again!

Harvey’s girls varsity tennis team saw their season end on a high note when the squad’s No.1 doubles team captured a second straight HVAL doubles championship.

Head coach Tim Cornell and his assistant Lily Ryan, despite seeing their team fall short on wins, took great pleasure in the postseason triumph of sophomores Arabella Serfilippi and Sarah Fisher in the doubles championship tournament as the pair has now earned the trophy in back-to-back seasons. As the No.1 doubles team, Serfilippi and Fisher won the championship by defeating the No.2 doubles team from the Westover School, 8-6.

In the quarterfinal round the Harvey duo started off sluggishly and found themselves down 3-2 to No.8 seed Westover, but they rallied to win the last six games for a solid 8-3 victory.

Serfilippi and Fisher found themselves down 3-2 in the semifinal to the No.5 seeded team from Forman, but they showed their competitive spirit and their will to win by once again winning the last six games to once again prevail 8-3.

Then, it was on to the final with the league doubles championship at stake, and Serfilippi and Fisher made Harvey proud in defeating Westover to take the doubles crown.

“In all three matches they played they found themselves down, but in all three cases they showed their heart and competitive spirit,” Coach Cornell said.

All totaled, Serfilippi and Fisher played for more than four hours in the HVAL doubles championship, which impressed first-year coach Ryan very much. “They are a dynamic duo who always bring the highest level of skill, commitment, enthusiasm, and grit to each practice and competition,” Coach Ryan said.  To put a bow on their season, Serfilippi and Fisher were selected HVAL All-League.

Coach Ryan also gave a shout-out to the team’s No.1 singles player, junior captain Maya Taub. “Maya approached each match with determination and experience,” the coach said.

Coach Cornell voiced his appreciation for the leadership of Taub and senior Daniela Rynott as team captains. “We were lucky to have two phenomenal captains who shepherded our team through a challenging season of inclement weather and cancellations,” Coach Cornell said, adding, “They brought us all together and led practice with the highest level of professionalism.”

Coach Cornell also gave a nod to the team’s underclassmen, saying, “They demonstrated incredible improvement from the start to the end of the season and we’re excited to see how Harvey girls' varsity tennis continues to succeed in future years.”

At the end-of-season dinner, the two coaches announced the names of the following special team award-winners:

MVP: Arabella Serfilippi and Sarah Fisher

MIP: Zoey Berman

Coaches Award: Daniela Rynott

Sportsmanship Award: Maya Taub

Learning the Ropes

This spring the Harvey girls JV tennis team put in several solid weeks of instruction and practice under head coach Kristen Allan and assistant Michelle Menacho and played matches against Greens Farms Academy, Westover, and King School.

While becoming familiar with the basic rules of tennis is not too difficult, mastering the technique of manipulating the racket and developing the necessary coordination, timing, and mental game takes time and consistent practice. Coach Allan applauds her players for being open to learning new techniques “and sticking to the process, even when initially frustrating.”

Coach Allan saluted the attitudes of the players, saying, “They displayed a positive, ‘can do’ approach and were flexible about playing singles or doubles, and playing with new partners.”

The coach also appreciated the players’ “willingness to call out the score and to be kind to opponents and partners.” The coach said, “There was an overall high level of good sportsmanship exhibited during the season.”

In her final thoughts on the season, Coach Allan said, “It was a building year with many athletes brand new to the sport of tennis. We were thrilled with the big improvements made by all players and the joy of playing the sport that was witnessed during practice every day. Coach Menacho and I really enjoyed working with this motivated group of Harvey student-athletes.”

At season’s end, the two coaches selected the following players for special team awards:

MVP: Morgan Marable

MIP: Victoria Hill

Sportsmanship Award: Lexi Goldstein

Golf HVAL Champions 2025

League Champions Again!

Harvey’s golf team did it again this spring. The Cavaliers won their second straight HVAL team championship, and senior Cade Gilligan repeated as the league’s individual champion.

Under the expert tutelage and guidance of head coach Doug Plaskett and assistant Alex Morse, the Harvey golf program enjoyed another successful spring.

The top highlight of the 2025 season was, of course, the team’s repeating as the HVAL champion followed closely behind by Gilligan’s capturing the individual championship in back-to-back seasons. In the championship event, Gilligan shot the lowest round of all the golfers, a 40, in the three-team championship tournament involving Harvey, Forman, and Westover.

Gilligan also provided another major season highlight against Forman at the Summit Club in Armonk. The team’s co-captain shot a 36 (even par) for the first time in Harvey golf history when all the other recorded scores were in the 40s.

Another season highlight involved the team’s other senior captain, Rohan Singh who had a 41 scoring average in all of his team’s matches.

The league acknowledged the outstanding seasons of Gilligan and Singh by making them HVAL All-League selections.

In addition to Gilligan and Singh, two other seniors, Lucien Fried and Owen McElfresh, will be moving on after graduation. Coach Plaskett will miss the team veterans. “The seniors have consistently contributed to the golf program's overall success through their leadership, strong performance, and mentorship of younger players,” Coach Plaskett said, adding, “The future of the team looks very promising, thanks to them.”

At season’s end, the two coaches announced the following golfers as winners of the special team awards:

MVP: Cade Gilligan

MIP:  Marlin Bieber

Cavalier: Rohan Singh

Boys Varsity Lacrosse (8-5 overall; 7-2 HVAL)

Harvey varsity boys lacrosse team 2025

Another Solid Season for the League Runner-Up

Harvey’s boys lacrosse team put up another outstanding season that took the Cavs to the HVAL championship game this spring for the fourth straight season against The Williams School Blues. When Harvey and Williams each won a game against the other in their two regular season matchups and entered the playoffs with identical won-loss records at 7-1, you knew their fourth-straight head-to-head in the HVAL championship game would likely be a nail-biter. And so it was, as the two evenly matched teams went at it for four quarters with Williams finally prevailing 13-11.

One of the major highlights of the season came in the first regular season meeting of the Cavs and the Blues when the Harvey boys thrilled the home crowd with a 12-11 overtime victory against their biggest rivals. Huge cheers erupted when Ryan Cuddy stunned Williams with the game-winning goal for the Cavs.

Harvey’s first-year head coach Tom Smith ’16 and assistant Kyle Delaney ’04 did a fine job in taking the Cavs back to the title match. Credit also goes to the leadership of the team captains -- seniors Jackson Saccomanno and Ryan Byrne and junior Evan Vasile.

Saccomanno delivered big time on the field as well. He led the team in goals with 48 in a season that saw him record his 200th career point. Coach Smith said Saccomanno “carried the offense this season.” He added, “Whether it was scoring the goals himself or assisting his teammates, Jackson made his mark on the stat sheet each game.”

Byrne also entered the lacrosse program’s record books during the course of the season. He scored his 100th career point and finished the season with 26 goals scored. “Ryan led our young attack line to success throughout the season and was a vocal leader throughout the season,” Coach Smith said.

The coach praised Evan Vasile for leading the defense “selflessly.” The entire defense, Vasile, junior Connor Hardy, and sophomore Jordan Sheppe, all got their first starts of their careers this season. “They played well together and ended up becoming a strong force in front of our goalie,” Coach Smith said.

Saccomanno, Byrne, Vasile, and senior Jonah Kass earned HVAL All-League honors. Saccomanno was also chosen All-NEPSAC and Vasile All-NEPSAC honorable mention.

This year’s team was full of first-year players who played significant roles. Sophomore goalie Patrick Lonergan enjoyed a breakout season. He finished with 82 saves. Coach Smith expects to see Lonergan have a big junior year minding the net. “Patrick will have the opportunity to step up to the challenge as a second-year varsity goalie,” Coach Smith said. Two other sophomores, the Cuddy brothers, Dylan and Ryan, also made significant contributions and Coach Smith sees a bright future for them. “Both Dylan and Ryan Cuddy will be the strength of our attack next season,” Coach Smith said.

In his final reflection on the 2025 season, Coach Smith shared his appreciation for the team’s seniors – Saccomanno, Byrne, Kass, and Will Bland. “Our strong leadership from the senior class really made our success possible,” the coach said, adding, “Whether it was leading in statistics or leading by example, our seniors contributed significantly to this program.”

Looking to 2026, Coach Smith said, “I see a lot of potential for success next spring.”

Commenting on his first year as head coach, he said, “I couldn’t have asked for a better first-year experience leading Harvey’s boys varsity lacrosse team.”

As season’s end the two coaches announced the following players as recipients of team awards:

MVP-Offense: Jackson Saccomanno

MVP-Defense: Evan Vasile

MIP: Ryan Dey

Coaches Award: Ryan Byrne

Coach Janos: Leaving a Legacy of Heart and Grit

This season marked the end of a remarkable era for Harvey girls varsity lacrosse, as coach Greg Janos '98 wrapped up his 12-year tenure as head coach. Although the 2025 campaign didn’t end in a winning season, it was filled with the kind of moments, milestones, and momentum that define the heart of a winning program in the making.

In reflecting on the 2025 season, Coach Janos said, “What truly set this team apart wasn’t the final score — it was the fight. Every single game was a battle, and every player who showed up was ready to give their all. Despite being outmatched on paper in several matchups, the Cavaliers never folded. They played through injuries, exhaustion, and adversity with a toughness that embodied what it means to wear Harvey on your jersey. They played to the last whistle — every time.”

Several players entered the Harvey athletics record books this season. Coach Janos was delighted to see junior goalkeeper Tory Janush reach the 200-save milestone. “Tory anchored the defense with unwavering resolve,” Coach Janos said. In another shining moment, senior Emily Sorio notched her 100th career goal, a major feat that Coach Janos said, “speaks to Emily’s consistency, leadership, and elite skill on the field.”

Coach Janos praised the entire squad for the establishing what he called “family-first, team-above-all culture.” He said, “They pushed each other, supported each other, and laid the groundwork for what I believe is the future of a revitalized and dominant Harvey lacrosse program.

As Coach Janos steps away, he looks back on his final season with fondness and pride.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” said Coach Janos. “We ended the season in the playoffs, on a good one, battling every step of the way. It’s been a pleasure and an honor to lead this program for the past 12 years, and I look forward to seeing these girls grow into absolute stars — on and off the field.” Sorio and teammate Chloe Eisenberg earned HVAL All-League selections. Eisenberg also garnered an All-NEPSAC honorable mention.

Coach Janos guided Harvey girls lacrosse teams to four HVAL championships – 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2022. He totaled 99 victories in his tenure as head coach.

At the end-of-season dinner, Coach Janos announced the recipients of the special team awards:

The Highs and Lows of a Winning Season

Harvey’s varsity baseball team enjoyed a winning season this spring, but players and coaches alike wish they could have gone deeper in the New England Small School Championship Tournament as they had done last year.

“We came into the year looking to make some noise in the New England tournament,” head coach Ray Lacen said. “The talent was there, and more importantly, the depth as well,” the coach said, adding, “As I look back on the season, I know we all felt that we were capable of much more.”

Despite seeing his boys fall in the tourney’s opening round to close out the 2025 campaign, Coach Lacen said there were several memorable moments along the way. Coach Lacen and his assistants Mark Milroy and Franklin Mundo Jr. see one game in particular in early May as serving as a top season highlight.  Coach Lacen offered this recollection: “The 2024 season ended with a 4-2 loss at Greenwich Country Day School, so the boys had May 2, 2025 circled on the schedule as we would once again visit GCDS. This year against Greenwich the boys put together competitive at-bats along with solid relief pitching to come away with a 10-8 win.” Coach Lacen added, “This game was the confirmation they needed as to what they were capable of and just how good they could be.”

Three other games stand out as season highlights when the Cavaliers racked up three shutout victories with all phases of the team –- pitching, hitting, and fielding – working in concert. There were back-to-back 20-0 shutouts, first against Forman and the next against Wooster, but the most impressive of the shutouts was Harvey’s 4-0 victory over King on the home field of the Vikings in Stamford. Senior co-captain Max Hernandez threw a masterful seven innings of one-hit ball. Hernandez earned HVAL All-League and All-NEPSAC honors.

Sophomore Jake Acosta led the team in hitting. He batted .538 and led the team in doubles with seven. He was second in RBIs with 12. Acosta earned HVAL All-League and All-NEPSAC honorable mention.

Hernandez, who was second in wins as a pitcher at 1-1 and tied with fellow starter Jack Amann, was No.2 in batting with a .500 average. Sophomore Dominick Bonserio, an HVAL All-League selection, was No.3 in hitting with a .448 average. He was second in doubles with five and led the team in runs scored with 17. Sophomore Darius Brown batted .421 and led the team in walks with 13 and stolen bases with eight. Team co-captain Luca Marano, who hit .300, led the team in RBIs with 13.

The Cavaliers will be losing six seniors to graduation. In addition to Hernandez, they are Luca Marano, Jack Amann, Will Hargreaves, Liam Tarpey, and Sam Schwartz. Coach Lacen said the returning starters will have to help fill the void of the  vacated spots in the lineup. “We will all need to assess our roles and be prepared to do a few things differently in order to grow from this past season,” Coach Lacen said, adding, “It will not be easy, but then again nothing worth achieving is.

At the team dinner, the three coaches announced the following players had earned special team awards:

MVP: Max Hernandez

MIP: Robbie Mejia

Pitcher of the Year: Jack Amann

Offensive Player of the Year: Dominick Bonserio

Cavalier Spirit: Jonathan Cappucci

One Gritty Group!

Harvey’s girls rugby team enjoyed a highly successful season thanks in large part not only to their talent but also to their grit and tireless determination to come out on top. Co-coaches Shannon Horan and Maddy Visintainer, with a big assist from the captains, senior Lil Acrish and juniors Maeve Lazzaro, Sophia Collum, and Casey Kelly, did an outstanding job of guiding and leading the team throughout the course of the season..

“Our team’s overall ability and desire to keep fighting until the end regardless of the score led to multiple comeback matches that went into the very last seconds,” Coach Visintainer said. One play in particular stands out for the coach as being emblematic of the tenacity of the Cavaliers. It came in Harvey’s first League match against Rye. Coach Visintainer recalls, “Even after being down at the half and again going into the last play of the game, our defense worked tirelessly as time ran out until causing a turnover giving Casey Kelly the opportunity to utilize her unique kicking skills for a 70-meter grubber kick and chase down the field and into the try zone for the win.” The coach remembers the thrill the team experienced on the play. “The excitement around this incredible play that can be accredited to a full team effort on defense shows the quickness of the game as well as the importance of giving it your all until that final whistle is blown.”

Coach Horan singled out three of the team’s veteran players for “making extraordinary strides in their skill.” They are senior Eva Yin on defense, Acrish on offense, and Kelly who enjoyed a big offensive year in leading the team in scoring with 12 tries over 13 matches. Coach Horan also applauded sophomore Mirosa Gregori, new to Harvey and rugby as a whole. “She was our MVP on defense with her fearless tackles and ruck,” Coach Horan said.

Coaches Horan and Visintainer appreciated the leadership and teaching abilities of the team’s returning players, especially captains Collum and Lazzaro. “They also excelled at maintaining positivity on and off the pitch,” Coach Visintainer said.

Coach Visintainer said the future is bright for Harvey girls rugby. “The substantial growth of our team, both in numbers and in skill set this past year, has us very excited for next year and the future of the program,” the coach said. She added, “Our veterans have built a strong foundation, while our younger players are quickly embracing our team culture, which makes me confident this blend of leadership and new talent will create something special. We're not just looking forward to competing — we're excited to continue building on our program's growth and watching each player reach their potential.”

At the team dinner, the two coaches announced the following players as recipients of the special team awards:

MVP-Offense:  Lily Acrish

MVP-Defense: Mirosa Gregori

MIP: Eva Yin

Signs Point to Future Success

In sizing up a winless spring 2025 season, Harvey boys rugby coach Phil Lazzaro finds a bright silver lining in how this year’s squad grew by season’s end.

“This season laid a solid foundation for future success,” Coach Lazzaro said, adding, “Though I would have loved to have captured some victories, I‘m confident that the boys put in the hard work necessary and showed improvement in their collective knowledge of the game to lead to future wins on the pitch.”

Coach Lazzaro looks to the last two matches as strong, positive signs of good things to come. On May 2, looking to avenge a 45-19 loss earlier to New Rochelle, the Harvey boys gave the Huguenots a scare before coming up short, 15-14. On May 13, in their second matchup against Dwight, who earlier in the season had beaten Harvey 34-12, the Cavaliers came close to a win once again before falling 24-15.

“Our last two matches of the season against New Rochelle and Dwight, respectively, were filled with highlights,” Coach Lazzaro said. “The boys lost both matches in close fashion, but the growth and improvement shown was outstanding,” he added.

Coach Lazzaro signaled out several players who produced standout seasons. He praised sophomore fly-half Ben Lawrence-Comerford as being “outstanding in attack and defense.” Coach Lazzaro said, “Ben adjusted to the new position and improved in his play since early March.” He added, “His drive, aggressiveness, and commitment were remarkable.”

Also earning the coach’s praise were juniors Vishal Thadani and Jordan Falk. Coach Lazzaro said the two forwards “showed great growth throughout the season, especially in their commitment to defensive structure.”

Coach Lazzaro also singled out Thadani and Falk, along with seniors Will Herman and Connor Harrington, for their “outstanding leadership” as the team’s captains.

Coach Lazzaro and his assistants Connor Welles ‘10 and Joe O'Connell ’16 chose the following players for the boys rugby program’s traditional awards:

Ted O'Connor Alumni Award: Connor Harrington and William Herman

Bravery: Jordan Falk and Armando Flores

Discipline: Rayce Volpi, Charles Englehardt, Vishal Thadani

Jazz: Ben Lawrence-Comerford, James Gittleman

Harvey Athletes Shine Once Again

Harvey’s track and field team enjoyed another successful spring season as the program’s athletes made individual improvements across the board and several set new team and personal records. Head coach Christian Coscio and his assistants Molly Feeney and Fiona Mohl did a wonderful job getting the most from their athletes who represented Harvey so very well at all the meets. The coaches got a big assist from the team leaders -- the senior captains Sophia Beldotti, Shae Falconer, Spencer Hanson, Ladidi Abdul-Wahab, Daniel Wood, and junior Mollie Weisberger.

Coach Coscio said the season produced many top highlights, including the establishment of several school records, strong performances from the team’s three MVPs, eighth grader Ally Zimmerman's qualification for the nationals, and breakout performances by ninth grader Vivienne Stoller and seventh grader Ella Adler in the 800 and 1500, ninth grader Lilah Groff in the 3000, sophomore Sienna Colgan in the javelin, and senior Sarah Wolf in the 100, 200, and 400-meter events.

This spring, Zimmerman, the first of the team’s three MVPs, continued the success from her cross country and indoor track seasons. She continued to work on her range in events, with the 800m being her primary race, but she also competed in events from the 400m up to the 3000m. “Ally broke eight school records during the spring season and was instrumental in the team’s success,” Coach Coscio said. “She makes those around her better and want to strive for more,” he added. Zimmerman earned selection as an All-NEPSAC athlete.

Coach Coscio praised Weisberger, the second MVP, as “a true team leader on and off the track.” He said, “Mollie is excellent at helping to teach her teammates and helping them succeed in their events. Mollie is also a multi-talented athlete, having competed in various sprinting, jumping, and relay events. She broke six school records during the spring season and set herself up nicely heading into her senior year.”

Junior O’Neil Ellis, the team’s third MVP, had a breakout year, making strong improvements especially in the spring track season. He hit solid personal best times in the 100, 200, and 400 and was an integral part of the 4x100m relay team that broke the school record this season. “O’Neil has also grown more comfortable in a leadership position and will be looked up to next year as a senior by the younger athletes,” Coach Coscio said.

Coach Coscio gave a shout-out to his two assistant coaches Feeney and Mohl. He said, “Coach Feeney ran early morning lifts for the team consistently this season and was huge for positive energy. Coach Mohl also brought positive energy along with mid-distance and distance experience which helped those groups develop even more this season. The coaching staff was as in sync as it may have ever been, which made things much easier at practices and meets.”

This spring’s team featured the largest group of seniors the program had so far. Coach Coscio said they will be missed. “With experience in all events it will be difficult to replace them, but they did a great job setting up the future generations for continued success,” Coach Coscio said..

In reflecting on the season as a whole, Coach Coscio voiced his pride in the positive attitude and the many accomplishments of the athletes. “ Everyone made an effort to improve each meet, and regardless of where they started, they all got better,” Coach Coscio said, adding,  “Next year we will look to build on those successes once more as we should have a strong returning core that will help us to do so.”

At the team dinner the three coaches announced the full slate of team award-winners:

Girls

MVP: Ally Zimmerman

MVP: Mollie Weisberger

Most Improved: Vivienne Stoller

Cavalier Spirit: Sarah Wolf

Boys

MVP: O’Neil Ellis

Cavalier Spirit: Daniel Wood

Sure Signs of Growth

The Harvey Middle School tennis team, with an entire roster of boys, had their fair share of highlights as they grew in the knowledge of the game and honed their skills under the tutelage of head coach Octavia Man and assistant Stephanie Metz.

One of the top highlights was the growth and performances of the doubles pairing of eighth grader Brandon Litofsky and seventh grader Phoenix Goldstein. Coach Man called the pair “the dream team” who won the most games this season and capped off the spring campaign with a major upset victory against a previously undefeated team. Coach Man said, “They were a great team, one that displayed patience, tenacity, and amazing communication.”

Another duo, sixth graders Logan Brockenbaugh and Jasper Pons-Beltsyk, also stood out. “They grew so much as a team,” Coach Man said, adding, “The hard work that they put in during the season paid off at the end with an amazing 6-4 victory.” The coach said Brockenburgh did a fine job of serving, recording at least one ace per game while Pons-Beltsyk’s displayed patience and determination in not giving up any points.

Eighth graders Matt Leand and Adam Desrocher, with a lot of hard work and practice, end up playing well together. “They were very encouraging and supportive of each other,” Coach Man said.

Coach Man also acknowledged the growth and improvement of sixth grader Wayden Ebanks. “Wayden got better and more confident with every practice and game he played,” the coach said, adding, “His forehand and serve helped him win many points during the season.”

Team records mean very little in middle school sports as the focus is on introducing the participants to the nuances of the game and developing their skills. Coach Man believes the team showed strong signs of improvement. “With every practice and match we played, the quality of our play grew,” Coach Man said. “They all practiced very hard and toward the end of the season, it showed with all the matches having close scores,” she said, adding, “I’m very proud of their work, and I hope they all continue to play during the summer.” She finished by saying, “I had a great time coaching them.”

At the end-of-the season, the coaches awarded the following players medals acknowledging their improvement:

Phoenix Goldstein

Jasper Pons-Beltsyk

Matt Leand

Logan Brockenbaugh

Diamonds in the Rough

Harvey Middle School head baseball coach Mike Fink and assistant Alex Kaplan welcomed a lot of new players to the sport this spring. As the season unfolded the Harvey boys developed their skills and grew in knowledge of the game. They also benefited from getting the chance to go up against a few teams in interscholastic competition. Coach Fink saw good signs of growth in his players and was particularly pleased to see them willing to try different positions.

Coach Fink reports that sixth grader Jasper Pons-Beltsyk provided the team with its most memorable moment of the spring in the final game. The coach described the moment: “After Jasper rounded third base with intentions of scoring, the opposing team surprised him by getting the ball to their catcher quicker than he anticipated, forcing Jasper into a pickle between third and home. Fortunately the team had watched the movie “The Sandlot" on one rainy day of practice, so Jasper was knowledgeable in the ways of the rundown. Jasper evaded being tagged on a half dozen trips back and forth, finally sliding in safe back at third. Both teams and their respective fanbases saluted him with cheers on his incredible effort.” Coach Fink also praised Pons-Beltsyk for his willingness to play any position he was asked to play.  He even tried his hand at catching in the season’s final game.

Another player who stood out was sixth grader Elias Hajem. “Elias performed well as a pitcher and third baseman and was the team’s most consistent hitter,” Coach Fink said. Also earning the coach’s praise was sixth grader JP Marcogliese who served as the team’s catcher even though he had never played the position prior to the season. The coach was also impressed with eighth grader Leo Rinaldi. “Leo worked hard at his fielding and hitting all year,” Coach Fink said. The coach recalled an impressive feat by Rinaldi.  He explained, “Although it was just practice, Leo hit two ‘out-of-the-park’ homeruns on the unofficial middle school baseball practice field, the Harvey softball field.”

At the end of the season, the two coaches selected the following players for special team awards:

MVP: Elias Hajem

MIP: Leo Rinaldi

Sportsmanship: Jasper Pons-Beltsyk
