It was another successful day of competition for Harvey’s track and field team, Monday, Jan. 13, in The Armory in New York City at an Ivy Prep 3 meet with new personal and school records established in several events.
The girls had another strong day of competition with eighth grader Ally Zimmerman running a 25-second personal record (PR) in the 1500m while setting a new school record time of 5:20.44. “Ally had a great day in her first 1500m run of the season, showing a solid ability to race the event while also having room for growth,” said Harvey coach Christian Coscio. Junior Mollie Weisberger continued to perform well in the high jump, leaping 4ft 10in, winning the event.” Mollie has consistently cleared 4ft 10 and is making great attempts at higher heights,” Coach Coscio said, adding, “At this point, it is not a matter of if but when she’ll clear 5 feet.”
The highlight of the day was senior Shae Falconer winning the shot put with a 31 feet 9 inch toss on her final throw, which was a 3.5ft personal best. “Shae absolutely launched the shot put last night, making her mark in the event,” said Coach Coscio. “Currently, she has the best throw in all of NYSAIS by over a foot,” he noted. Falconer capped off her big day by earning the Harvey Sportsmanship Spotlight Athlete of the Meet.
On the boys' side, senior Felipe Torres improved his personal record time as well as the school record in the 1600m, running 4:52.37. Sophomore Aidan Garcia also improved his school record in the 600m, running 1:33.81.
Coach Coscio was also impressed with the performances of three ninth graders – Ruth Doran in the 1000m (3:37.56, 17sec PR), Lilah Groff in the 1500m (5:52.53, 8 sec PR), and Mike Wang in the 600m (1:44.05, 4 sec PR).
The Harvey athletes will head down to Staten Island Wednesday, Jan. 22 for their next track and field competition.
