The Harvey Middle School soccer team traveled to Mead School Wednesday, Nov. 6 for their penultimate game of the season. Coming off back-to-back losses, the Harvey team hoped to take advantage of the unseasonably warm November afternoon with a victory, and they did just that.
The Cavaliers got off to a slow start, and the game remained tied well into the first half. Matteus Steins led a strong offensive surge, and scored as the first half came to an end to put the Cavaliers up 1-0 at halftime. The team knew if they did not start the second half strong, the lead they had might slip away. When Matt Leand and Emerson Sanchez were quick to find the back of the net, their goals put the Cavs up 3-0.
After playing the first half in goal, Hank Gilbert found the back of the net himself to put the Cavs up 4-0. With less than five minutes remaining, Mead capitalized on a strong offensive push to make the final score 4-1.
The Cavaliers, at 3-3-1, have one game remaining on Tuesday, November 12th against Iona Prep, and are eager to get one last win at home.
In two previous games, one against Whitby on Nov. 5 and the other against Rippowam-Cisqua, Oct. 30, the Cavaliers had trouble scoring. In the Whitby game, the Cavs fell behind by three at the half and needed a strong and solid performance on both sides of the ball to try to mount a second half comeback. It was not to be, however.
Although Jasper Pons-Beltsyk, Brandon Litofsky, and Emerson Sanchez played strong they couldn’t find the back of the net. Will Fottrell and Matteus Steins led the team from the midfield and tried to stop a strong and speedy Whitby attack. Harvey fell 5-0.
In their Halloween eve game against Rippowam-Cisqua, the Cavs fell behind early, giving up three Rippowam goals in the first half, and found themselves playing from behind for the remainder of the game. The Cavalier offense did not give up, however, and Matteus Steins put Harvey on the board with a goal off a rebound from a strong shot by Emerson Sanchez. Hank Gilbert was tenacious in goal and Will Fottrell and Johann Fueting held the Cavalier defense together. Ripp went on to win the contest 7-1
