For the third year in a row Harvey’s golf team has captured the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship at the match held Wednesday, May 13 at the Green Woods Country Club in Winsted, Connecticut. Along with the team win, Harvey sophomore Ian Quilley won the title as the league’s top golfer as a result of his outstanding play in the championship event.

Harvey registered the lowest score of 165 to win the HVAL first-place trophy. Finishing behind the Harvey team was runner-up Westover who tallied a team score of 222. Quilley finished as the medalist followed by junior team captain Brian Goldban who secured the runner-up designation.

Quilley played a terrific round, shooting a two-over par 37. After starting three-over through five holes, he finished the last four holes in one-under. Quilley struck the ball nicely with his irons all day, as he had a handful of birdie opportunities. He converted one of them, as he made two on the par-three 8th hole. Harvey coach Teddy Keller thought Quilley was primed to play well for the championship match. “He kept up his strong play of late, as he has shot in the 30s the last three matches,” Coach Keller said.

Goldban was on top of his game as well, hitting the ball beautifully, en route to 39. He hit seven out of nine greens in regulation, and had birdies on holes 2 and 8. “While Brian felt that he struggled with putting, he also said today was his ‘best day of ball striking all season,’" Coach Keller shared.

The team also benefited from solid contributions from sophomore Marlin Bieber who shot 42. He started off the day hot with a birdie on the par-4 first hole. While he faltered in the middle of the round, Bieber finished with four straight pars. “I thought Marlin showed great  resilience after taking a two-stroke penalty on the third hole,” said Coach Keller.

The fourth member of the championship team, junior Leo Marano, shot 47 to help boost his team’s chances in the championship round.

The Harvey team will get another shot in competition when they play Wednesday, May 20 in the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) championship tournament. Coach Keller said the team “gained great confidence” from their HVAL championship match and are looking forward to the NYSAIS event when many of the top schools in the area will compete at Harrison Meadows Country Club.
