Harvey’s girls basketball team extended their winning streak to seven games Friday, Jan. 16, with a 53-47 victory over the Storm King School Cougars on the road in Cornwall on Hudson.

It was a hard-fought battle from the start as the two teams traded baskets throughout the first half. Storm King led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers turned the tables in the second quarter to enter intermission with a 26-24 lead.

The Cavs made some adjustments of their 2-3 zone defense to start the second half and it helped cause several Storm King offensive drives to come up empty. Meanwhile, Harvey’s offense perked up. “We started to move the ball a little more quickly which allowed us to get amazing open looks down low,” said Harvey coach Hannah Paul. Harvey outscored the Cougars 16-10 to open up an eight-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

With the score 42-34 to start the fourth quarter, the two teams battled to get the upper hand on offense, but what resulted was a back-and-forth contest that allowed Harvey to hold the lead until the final buzzer.

Harvey’s top offensive threat, senior point guard Peyton Forde, had another outstanding performance, leading the Cavs with 25 points. Junior forward Madison Boothe had a breakout game, finishing in double digits with 10 points. “It was great to see Madison turn on the gears and become really aggressive,” Coach Paul said. The coach was also impressed with the team’s defensive efforts, especially the trio of Forde, junior guard Lainey Hanson, and senior Amani Carty. “Peyton and Lainey were closing the gaps and getting their hands up on their shooters and Amani was protecting the rim,” said Coach Paul, who liked a lot of what she saw from the entire team. “With our improving communication, our greater court awareness, and our using the clock to our advantage, we were able to execute and pull through with another great win,” Coach Paul said.

With the win in the nonleague game, Harvey’s overall record now stands at 8-2. The girls return to action at home in another out-of-league matchup Tuesday, Jan. 21 when they welcome The Frederick Gunn School to Katonah.
