Harvey’s Cavaliers took their hot bats to Rye Friday, April 25, looking to continue the offensive production that saw them score 40 runs in their last two games, but the Cavs saw their bats cool off as two Rye Country Day School pitchers combined to beat Harvey 8-2.

Entering the Rye game, Harvey pitchers had not allowed a run in the Cavs’ last two 20-0 victories, but the Rye Wildcats didn’t waste much time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning after Harvey did not score in the top of the inning. Harvey starting pitcher Jack Amann allowed two singles sandwiched around a walk to give Rye its first run. A two-out RBI single made it 2-0 Rye at the end of one.

Harvey got those two runs back right away in the top of the second. Darius Brown worked out a one-out walk and came all the way around to score on Luca Marano’s triple to right. Will Hargreaves followed with a single to drive in Marano and tie the game at 2-2.

It stayed tied until the bottom of the fourth when Rye scored a run on a walk and two singles.

The Wildcats broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs to take an 8-2 lead.

The Cavs did not mount much of a scoring threat after they had tied the game in the second. They managed a total of only five hits, three of them coming over the final five innings. Marano, Brown, Hargreaves, Liam Tarpey, and Frank Mejia had one hit each. Amann, the starter and losing pitcher, tossed 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on 11 hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Hargreaves mopped up, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing a run, on two hits. He struck out two and walked none.

Harvey's spring record falls to 2-3.

Schedule note: The Saturday, April 26 game against King has been postponed until May 10.
