Defense Stands Out in Cavs' Loss to Williams

Girls soccer preseason

Harvey’s girls varsity soccer team gave Williams a lengthy battle before falling to the Blues 4-1 on the road in New London, Connecticut, Monday, Sept. 19.

With goalkeeper Liz Hurley doing a superb job in front of the net and junior Phoebe Lichtman and ninth grader Skye Watson shutting down several Williams’ scoring opportunities, Harvey held the Blues scoreless in the first half. It was 0-0 at intermission.

Williams finally got on the board in the second half, scoring four goals to Harvey’s one. Senior Madison Reckson scored for the Cavaliers at the 67th minute to deny Williams a shutout victory. It was Reckson’s second goal in her first three varsity games. Hurley finished the game with 11 saves.

“We held strong for 60 minutes, keeping the match at nil-nil, but we lost track of  Williams’ best player who put a few goals past us,” said Harvey coach Sarah Zeigler.

Harvey, now 0-3 to start the season, will play HVAL rival Watkinson Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m. in Hartford.
