XC Boys Take First ... Again!

The boys on Harvey’s varsity cross-country team turned in another excellent performance in a league meet hosted by Forman at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, Connecticut, Saturday, Oct. 1.

The Cavaliers’ second win in two tries was even more impressive than the first which featured a three-school competition in the season-opening victory on Harvey’s campus. In the Forman-hosted meet, Harvey runners finished first while competing against runners from five other HVAL teams. In addition to Forman and Harvey, the race included Wooster, Watkinson, Christian Heritage, and South Kent. Meanwhile, the Harvey girls fared well, finishing third, and making great strides in their development.

The Harvey boys won the meet with 32 points as all five of their scorers finished in the top 10, led by senior Hudson Chris who finished first in a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds.

“Hudson ran a tactical race that led him to victory while pushing the other boys to run strong races,” said Harvey coach Christian Coscio. Harvey’s Felipe Torres finished No. 4 (17:28), Bennet Katzin was No. 8 (18:22), Will Hargreaves, No. 9 (18:37), and Harry Kreeger No. 10 (19:06). Coach Coscio singled out Kreeger for making a major contribution to Harvey’s first-place finish. “Harry really stepped up, knowing that we needed a good race out of him to score well as a team,” Coach Coscio said.

The top 10 finishers for the girls included Addy Shalov who placed No.5 (22:49) and Sophia Beldotti who finished No. 9 (25:31).

Coach Coscio was impressed by the entire squad’s performance which saw every athlete run a personal best time. The coach said Addy Shalov set the tone by running almost 8 minutes faster than she did at last year’s HVAL Invitational. “Addy had been running strong workouts at practice and was poised for a breakout and Saturday she did just that,” Coach Coscio said. He said the energy the girls brought to their races sparked the boys to dominate in their race. “All in all, it was a great race to help us build momentum as we head into the pre-championship season,” added the coach.

The Harvey squad will have a short break from racing competition before returning to action Oct. 12 at Wooster.
