Cavs Net Impressive League Win

boys varsity soccer action

Harvey’s boys varsity soccer team improved to 5-3 on the season with a solid performance Monday, Oct. 3, notching a 6-2 league victory on the road in New London, Connecticut against The Williams School. Freshman Patrick Cuneo with four 4 goals  and senior captain Clayton Collum with a goal and three assists led the offensive attack in what their coach Alex Morse said was the squad’s “most complete” game of the season.

From the start of the game the Cavaliers moved the ball effectively, putting together passing combinations that resulted in quality chances on goal. Unfortunately, two of Harvey’s shots on goal hit the posts and other shots went for naught when the Blues goalkeeper made several nice saves. Harvey finally broke through in the 25th minute after Jonah Kass received a long ball and neatly one-touched it back to the 18-yard mark where Cuneo blasted a low shot past the keeper. Harvey continued to create chances and struck again for a score in the 40th minute when Collum played a through ball to Cuneo for a 2-0 lead at the half.

Harvey came out quickly in the second half and put the game away within the first five minutes.  After a Collum corner, Cuneo collected a loose ball and hit the upper corner for a 3-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, junior Hayden Zhang redirected a corner from Collum for the Cavs’ fourth goal.  It was Zhang’s first varsity goal.

All members of the team got meaningful minutes throughout the remaining 40 minutes. Cuneo added a fourth goal in the 57th minute as he chipped a ball over the goalkeeper. Collum rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute.

While the Cavaliers had 17 shots on goal, they gave up nine shots on goal.  The Harvey goalkeepers. Dylan Gueli, Jonah Kass and Andreas Seriflippi combined to make seven saves.

Assistant Coach Simon Leibovic was impressed with Harvey’s ball movement. “On a large field we really moved the ball well, and were able to pick apart the Williams defense,” Coach Leibovic said. “ I hope to see more of that in the coming games,” he added.

Strong ball movement started in the back with solid play from backs Ryan Byrne, Kirk Ortega, Eli Cornell, and Captain Dylan Kluge.

With the league win, Harvey improves to 4-1 in the HVAL.The Cavs return to play Thursday when they visit the Christian Heritage School before hosting Wooster on Friday.
