Cavs Follow Tough Loss with Big Win

varsity hockey 2023

After suffering a 5-4 overtime loss against Greenwich Country Day Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Cavaliers came back the next day against another FAA opponent, Hamden Hall, and beat the Hornets 2-1 on their home ice at the Ralph Walker Rink in New Haven.

Despite weary legs, Harvey sophomore Anthony Galtieri scored with 1:22 left to break the tie and give the Cavs an important win.

The Hornets opened the scoring late in the first period on a two-on-one break. Harvey would tie the score early in the second period when James Gittleman found a loose puck in the crease and scored with.assists from Vincent Andren and Jordan Freund.

Both teams peppered the goaltenders with shots from everywhere. Richard Sullivan stood tall in the Harvey crease, making 45 saves and earning another win.

“We didn’t have a good jump today and really had trouble getting to the good ice to shoot,” said Harvey coach Alex Morse. “But the team worked hard to force shots from the outside on defense and Sullivan came up big several times to pick up his defenders,” said Coach Morse.

Late in the third period, Galtieri gathered a loose puck at the point, beat his defender, and fired a shot just over the goaltender blocker to give the Cavs a road win.

In the 5-4 overtime loss Tuesday to GCDS, Harvey had a poor first period and trailed by the score of 3-1. Newcomer James Gittleman scored his first goal as a Cavalier to help keep Harvey in the game.

The second period saw more even play and very few scoring chances for each team. The score remained 3-1 after two full periods.

Harvey would dominate the final period, blasting 20 shots on net. Senior Vincent Andren got the comeback started, scoring unassisted just 4:27 into the final period. In the final five minutes of the game, Harvey earned a power play and tied the game when Mark Miceli found a loose puck and deposited a rebound. The Tigers, however, scored a go-ahead goal with just under 3 minutes remaining. Yet, Harvey would gain another power play in the last two minutes. Junior Zack Marvin tied the game at 4-4 just a minute later. Marvin, Andren and captain Jordan Freund each collected two points apiece in the game.

Harvey now stands at 5-4-1 overall on the season. The Cavs are 3-4-1 in league play and remain in the hunt for a playoff berth.
