Cavs Fall in HVAL First Rounder

Cavs Fall in HVAL First Rounder

At halftime, Harvey’s girls varsity soccer team looked like they might pull off an upset in their quarterfinal round of the HVAL playoffs, but Forman rallied in the second half to tie the match at 2-2 before scoring the tie-breaker to win 3-2 and bounce the Cavs from the tournament.

Harvey jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half on goals from ninth graders Mollie Weisberger and Sophia Collum. Although she did not find the net again, Weisberger kept up the offensive pressure even after being marked by Forman’s best defender.  Collum’s goal came when she stole the ball away from the Lions goalie. Harvey lost senior captain Juliet Jaques to an early first half injury, but senior Eve Doran filled in admirably, helping to control the midfield, taking on the responsibility of taking set pieces where she was able to set up many opportunities.

Harvey’s defense overall was stout. Senior Madison Reckson played her strongest game, helping to prevent many scoring opportunities and distributing the ball from the back to create offensive opportunities.

The second half saw the momentum shift to Forman who held Harvey scoreless, tied the game, and then won it on a late goal.

Harvey coach Sarah Zeigler was proud of her team’s performance. “The Cavs stood strong in a tough playoff atmosphere,” Coach Zeigler said.

Senior captain Liz Hurley recorded nine saves in front of the goal.

Harvey ends the season at 6-12-1.
