Cavs Bested by Westover

GVS team huddle

Harvey’s girls varsity soccer team dropped a 7-1 decision to Westover School Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The Cavs scored their lone goal in the first half when ninth grader Mollie Weisberger blasted one from 33 feet away. Harvey was down 4-1 at halftime.

Despite the lop-sided score, Harvey saw some fine play from Phoebe Lichtman, Mariona Amat, and Sara Adelman. Lichtman did a job of controlling the ball on her possessions and outmatched her defenders. Amat was solid in helping to control the midfield and made an impact on both sides of the ball. Adelman played another good game on defense at left back and created some scoring opportunities. Senior captain Liz Hurley had eight saves.

Harvey coach Sarah Zeigler saw a good effort from her squad despite their struggles to score. “Our Cavaliers put a lot of heart on the field against a tough opponent,” Coach Zeigler said. “We were able to create a lot of opportunities for shots on goal, but Westover’s senior sweeper tempered our efforts,” added the coach.

The loss drops the Cavs to 0-5-1. Their next game is Friday, Sept. 30 at Christian Heritage.

Almost a win

Harvey came closest to claiming its first victory of the season Friday, Sept. 23, but had to settle for a 1-1 ie against league rival Wooster.

Ninth grader Amani Carty’s goal from 45 feet from the Wooster net tied the game in the second half.

When senior Juliet Jaques was moved to the sweeper position following Wooster’s lone goal the shift served to shut down an aggressive offense by the Generals. Senior Juli Rocco’s move to the center mid-position commanded the tempo and slowed Wooster's opportunities while creating some for Harvey.

Senior goalkeeper Liz Hurley notched 12 saves, one of them coming on a one-on-one encounter with the help of senior Eve Duran.
