Harvey’s boys varsity basketball team went on a 16-0 run to start their game against a visiting Marvelwood squad Monday, Jan. 13, and the Cavs never looked back, going on to win 87-31 in the Fenstermacher Athletic Center. Harvey coach Connor Welles described the nonleague contest as the Cavs’ “most complete game this season, from tip-off to final buzzer.”
The Marvelwood team did not score their first basket until the 12:22 mark when they hit a jump shot just inside the 3-point line. Harvey led 33-2 a little more than halfway through the first half, and the Cavs went into halftime leading 43-9, capping off the best start to a game they have had so far this season. Coach Welles credits an “active defense applying sustained pressure and patience on offense to get good looks” with producing the dominating performance.
Senior captain Jonah Kass led all scorers with 21 points. Juniors Cam Powell-Spruils and Piotr Pawel Pajewski combined for 24, Powell-Spruils with 13 and Pajewski with 11.
Coach Welles hopes the Cavs, now 5-2, can maintain their high level of energy and solid approach on offense when they return to action Wednesday at home against what he described as a “formidable Storm King squad.” The tip-off is slated for 4:15 p.m.
