Boys Advance in NEPSAC Tourney

Boys varsity basketball action on court

The HVAL champion Harvey boys basketball team remains in the hunt for a second first place trophy after beating Gann Academy 72-60 Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the NEPSAC Tournament Championship in the Fenstermacher Athletic Center.

Fresh off their clinching of the HVAL championship last Saturday when they knocked off Watkinson, the Cavaliers welcomed Gann to Katonah and beat the Waltham, Massachusetts prep school handily. They had a 24-point lead with just over two minutes to play when coach Denis Arnautoivc turned to the guys on the bench to finish off the victory Harvey had well in hand.

Harvey set the tone early by scoring seven points before Gann got on the board. The visitors managed to get back in the game, however, and were down by only two at the 12:42 mark in the first half. It would be the closest Gann would get as Kirk Ortega and Olaf Gorksi paced the offense by putting in eighth points each. Ortega was two for two on 3-pointers while Gorski did his damage from underneath the basket. Jonah Kass scored seven points, three of them coming on a shot from long distance. It was back-to-back 3-pointers from Ortega and Kass that helped Harvey pull away early in the first half, and Sukie Vongveeranonchai chipped in six points of his own. Harvey led 36-24 at the half.

The second half belonged to Harvey as they built a 20-point lead at the 06: 58 mark and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. Vongveeranonchai got hot and led the Cavs in second-half points with eight. He would finish the game tied with Gorski with a team-leading 14 points. Kass finished with 13 while Ortega tallied a total of 12.

As the final two minutes ticked off the clock, the Harvey crowd cheered the non-starters who scored some points. Among the top scorers off the bench were Charles Treseler who had four, Dante Meloni and Cameron Powell-Spruils with three each, and Dylan Gueli and Aaron Providence with two apiece..

With the win, Harvey moves on to the semifinal round to play Greens Farms Academy, who beat King 79-76 in their quarterfinal matchup Wednesday. The Cavs, the No. 4 seed, host GFA the No. 8 Saturday at noon.
