Bad Weather, Good Results for Track & Field at All-New England Meet

The conditions were horrible and not conducive to good competition, yet several Harvey athletes performed well against all odds on a chilly, damp day Saturday, May 20, at the NEPSTA Division III Championship meet hosted by Marianapolis Prep in Thompson, Connecticut.

One of those braving the elements and performing well was ninth grader Skye Watson who hit a big personal best in the javelin toss, throwing 73ft 4in for the event. Junior Olaf Gorski also earned a personal best in the shot put while being barely able to grip the implement due to wet conditions, yet throwing it 35ft 10.25in. Senior Lucas Roberts recorded 34ft 2.5in on the triple jump, placing him No. 8 in the event and earning him Honorable Mention All-NEPSAC. Coach Christian Coscio said the highlight of the meet was sophomore Felipe Torres' “gutsy” 3000m run, where he convincingly dipped under the 10-minute barrier, running a 9:56.52 for the event.

Coach Coscio said he was proud of the performances his athletes gave under very challenging circumstances. “To be able to compete and have a positive mindset in the horrid conditions they faced was impressive to see. The athletes were tested and they responded, too.”

The team returns to action Wednesday, May 24, at 1:30 p.m. for the NYSAIS Championship meet on Randalls Island in New York City.
