READ ALL ABOUT IT

The fall sports season delivered lots of excitement and thrills from September through November from teams on all three levels -- varsity, JV, and middle school. In addition to the admirable effort, dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship that were on full display throughout the season by our Cavaliers, there were outstanding individual performances on all levels and history-making achievements by several Harvey varsities. The Fall Sports Wrap that follows shares the season's successes and recognizes the athletes who stood out on each team and those on the varsities who were awarded special recognition by the respective leagues. Harvey salutes all the fall athletes and their coaches for their contributions to making the 2025 so very successful.

One Exciting, Record-Setting  Season

The fall 2025 season produced an historical campaign for Harvey’s varsity volleyball, not one with a storybook ending but one that saw the talented group reach significant milestones, just not of the championship kind. Guided once again by the outstanding coaching tandem of Denis Arnautovic as head coach and Kyle Groff as the assistant, the 2025 edition of Harvey varsity volleyball finished as runner-ups in both the HVAL and NEPSAC championship tournaments.

Along the way to their appearances in both the HVAL and NEPSAC Class C title matches, the Cavaliers set program records. This is the first year they tied for first place in the HVAL regular season and went 9-1, achieving with their highest winning percentage in the league standings. Making it to the NEPSAC final was a program first as well. They earned the berth in the NEPSAC tourney and were awarded the No.2 seed out of 24 schools, receiving the highest seed in Cavalier history, and their 17 win total ties them with last year’s record-setting mark. Finishing as the NEPSAC Class C championship tournament was special in the eyes of Coach Arnautovic. “I couldn't be prouder of the girls,” he said. “Their names will be forever engraved on the NEPSAC Class C  finalist trophy to mark this historic accomplishment,” the coach said, adding, “I hope this year’s success will motivate more girls to dedicate themselves to the beautiful game of volleyball.”

Coach Arnautovic said that in addition to all the wins they amassed, the records they established, and the outstanding effort they gave, he admires “how much they learned this year about to be resilient in difficult situations.” He also praised the squad for its outstanding teamwork and camaraderie. “From the beginning of the year it was clear that the team worked as one, the girls showing great support for each other and not shying away from any challenges,” Coach Arnautovic said, adding, “They picked each other up and kept pushing each other to get the most out of themselves and the team.”

The coach also acknowledged the leadership of the veteran players, especially that of the three senior captains, Casey Kelly, Maeve Lazzaro, and Sara Strnad. "All three captains made sure that everyone felt included and appreciated,” Coach Arnautovic said.  He also gave a shout-out to the seniors. “I would like to thank all the seniors for their dedication and hard work over the past few years,” Coach Arnautovic said. “You set the tone for the rest of the girls to follow. I’m confident that this leadership rubbed off on the underclassman and that they will continue raising the bar.” The coach said this season’s success was due to the contributions from everyone on the roster and wished to acknowledge and thank Lucy LaGattuta, Talya Langer, Zoey Berman, Sydney Boothe, Jadyn Lurie, Sophia Kimmel, Carissa Rocco, and Jordan Cherry. He also thanked the often unsung heroes of a sports team, its managers, who, this year, were seniors Summer Brewster and Chloe Siddons, and ninth grader Lucy LiCalzi.

In postseason awards, Kelly, Strnad, and Samantha Roberts were selected HVAL All-League.  Kell led the team in assists. Strnad had the most blocks for the Cavaliers, and Roberts led the team in kills. Kelly and Strnad also received All-NEPSAC honors while Roberts and Peyton Forde, the team leader in digs, earned All-NEPSAC honorable mention.

The 2025 season also marks the end of Coach Groff’s nine-year run as Harvey’s volleyball coach, and Coach Arnautovic offered his appreciation of his longtime assistant’s efforts.  He said, “Kyle was a part of the program since 2016, and his passion and knowledge of the game combined with his caring persona and love for coaching propelled us into the program we are today. I couldn't be more thankful and appreciative of his commitment to the Harvey volleyball program.”

At the team dinner the two coaches announced the names of those selected for special team awards:

MVP: Casey Kelly

MIP: Sam Roberts

Coaches Award: Peyton Forde

Cavalier Award: Sara Strnad

Honing Their Skills for the Next Level

Harvey’s very successful varsity volleyball program looks to be on solid footing with players waiting in the wings from this year’s JV team. Under the helm of head coach Joanne Stroud and assistant Michelle Menacho, the JV squad gained a lot of in-game experience and developed their ball-handling skills in preparation for their eventual participation on varsity.

Coach Stroud enjoyed her first year as head coach. “It was a pleasure to coach these girls and watch them grow and improve their skills,” the coach said.

In a season of many positives, Coach Stroud said the team’s performance in their Pink game was one of the most memorable moments in the fall campaign. “Every player contributed in her own unique way.” Coach Stroud said, adding, “It has truly been an honor to coach this team, and I can’t wait to watch them continue their journey as volleyball players.”

The two coaches recognized four players with the special team awards at the end of the year:

MVP: Kaitlyn Moskowitz

MVP: Hannah Gorenfeld

MIP:  Scarlett  Mackler

Cavalier Award: Katie Fried

A Return to Glory

For the first time in school history, the boys varsity soccer team has won back-to-back Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championships in a fall season that was filled with highlights of outstanding performances by individuals and the entire 2025 team itself. Head coach Alex Morse and assistants Simon Leibovic and Connor Welles ’10 did a masterful job in guiding their team to capturing the top prize in the HVAL championship playoffs.

Coach Morse offered an impressive list of season highlights, none more important than the team’s run to a championship which capped off a remarkable 11-game winning streak that included finishing atop the HVAL standings in the regular season and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. “This year was the first time we were outright champions in both the regular season and in the tournament,” Coach Morse said with great pride in his team’s history-making accomplishment. The coach also saw the 7-1 win against the perennially tough Class B Rye Country Day (7-1) as another top season highlight.  Senior Jack Muns enjoyed a monster game, scoring five goals against the Wildcats.

Another major highlight for the coach was Harvey’s 5-4 defeat of Storm King on Homecoming Day. Last, but certainly not least, was Harvey’s beating the Cavs’ chief rival Wooster three times, twice in their regular season matchups and the third coming in the HVAL championship final, a 2-0 Cavalier victory at home in front of their fans. Coach Morse said this year’s team’s success against Wooster was particularly satisfying. “After having played five seasons against Wooster in the finals of the HVAL tournament, the two schools have built up quite a rivalry,” Coach Morse said, adding, “It was special beating our rival three times this year, especially in the finals of the tournament for the second straight year in front of our school’s student body.”

Muns finished the season as the team’s top offensive player. He tallied 27 goals and 16 assists to register 43 points. Patrick M. was second in goals scored with 19 and Roger Franchetti was the team’s third leading scorer with 12 goals and 10 assists. Junior goalkeeper Patrick Lonergan, credited with seven shutouts, finished his marvelous season with 77 saves, a saves percentage of 75.5%, and just 1.32 goals allowed per game.

With the team capturing the league crown, the HVAL recognized six Cavaliers for their outstanding contributions. Earning All-League honors were four seniors, captains Jack Muns, Evan Vasile, and Thomas Schiwek, and Franchetti. Also named HVAL All-League were juniors Jake Gershon and Patrick Lonergan.

The New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) also selected Harvey players for postseason awards. Muns and Vasile were named All-NEPSAC. Muns was also selected as a Small School Senior Western All-Star. Franchetti and Gershon received All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention.

Coach Morse singled out three newcomers to the team this year – Franchetti, Gershon, and sophomore Nicholas Mena. “We had some wonderful additions to an already solid team and the addition of these three players made us a more complete team,” Coach Morse said. He also applauded the contributions of the team's goalie Lonergan. “Patrick made big saves when we needed them, earning seven clean sheets (shutout wins) throughout the season,” the coach said.

Coach Morse voiced his pride for all their accomplishments of the 2025 Cavaliers in this championship season and throughout their Harvey careers. “We had a target on our backs all year long within the league and we were able go 9-1 during the regular season,” Coach Morse said.

At the team dinner following the season, the coaches presented the following players with the special team awards:

MVP: Jack Muns

MVP Defense: Jake Gershon

MIP: Patrick Lonergan

Coaches Award: Evan Vasile

JV Boys Soccer

A Squad with Character and Skills

The JV soccer boys borrowed a page from the varsity’s success story this season. Although the JV squad had only a five-game schedule, head coach Connor Welles ’10 and assistant Brandon Paguada were pleased to see both of their team’s two wins come against longtime rival Wooster whose varsity this season lost to Harvey’s varsity three times in three meetings, including the HVAL championship game.

Coach Welles described his team’s matchups with Wooster as a “derby-style rivalry.” One of the top highlights of an individual player’s season came when Harvey met the JV Generals on their turf in Danbury. Sophomore Juan Antonio Ayala had an outstanding performance from the outside midfield position. “Juan was relentless on both sides of the ball,” Coach Welles said. The coach said Ayala recorded three assists because “he was constantly putting his teammates in favorable positions.”

Another top-flight individual performance came from freshman Josh Eichinger who had an outstanding game from the striker position during the away match at St Luke’s. “Josh kept up constant pressure against the JV Storm, creating many opportunities for his teammates and himself,” Coach Welles said, adding “Josh was the orchestrator of the game-tying goal.”

Sophomore Pablo Verdu provided the JV Cavs with an outstanding performance in all their matches. Coach Welles said Pablo, as the team’s sweeper, was a pivotal player. “He kept us in each match by thwarting attacking opportunities,” Coach Welles said, adding, “Pablo’s athletic ability, combined with his soccer intuition, was an invaluable asset to our defense and team structure.”

Reflecting on the season, Coach Welles liked everything about this year’s squad. “The quality of character and soccer abilities displayed on the field this year was one the Cavalier community can admire and attempt to emulate,” the coach said. “The camaraderie from the newest ninth grader through the returning veterans created a team chemistry and atmosphere the flourished athletic excellence,” he said, adding, “The 2025 Cavalier JV soccer team leaves the field this fall with pride surrounding this past season and foundation for future success for the players and the program.”

The JV coaches recognized the following players for the special team awards:

MVP: Sammy Schoenholt

MIP: Haeseo Kang

Coaches: Pablo Verdu

Girls Varsity Soccer (12-4-1 overall; 10-1-1 HVAL)

A History-Making Championship Season

What a fall 2025 season for Harvey’s girls varsity soccer team! Not only did the Cavaliers win their first-ever Housatonic Valley Athletic League championship, but they did so in dominating fashion. Under the guidance of head coach Dylan McDonough and his assistant Shannon Horan, the Harvey girls reached double-digit wins (10) against league opponents and capped off the season with a four-game winning streak that ended with the championship trophy. It was the first league title for the girls since they were three-peat champions of the old Hudson Valley Athletic League in 2007-09.

Coach McDonough’s team featured a talented offense, a stingy defense, and the great intangible – terrific leadership from the veteran players and the team’s four captains, seniors Sophia Collum, Mikayla Neave, and Mollie Weisberger, and junior Stella Ruiz-Vicente.

While winning the HVAL championship game 3-1 over No. 2 seed Watkinson gave the top-seed Cavs their crown, their hard-fought, nail-biting semifinal victory against Williams will go down as a game for the ages. A 0-0 game throughout regulation time put everything on the line when the two teams faced each other in a round of six penalty kicks that ended with a 3-3 tie before  eventually coming down to sudden death. The tension could not have been higher when Williams stepped up for their potential game-winning kick, but the shot hit the post. With Harvey needing a goal to seal the victory, junior Rylan Gilligan delivered under pressure, burying the ball in the back of the net to lift the team to a 4-3 victory and send them to the HVAL final.

Asked to pick one or two moments from this season that stand out, Coach McDonough said “the entire season was a highlight,” noting that the Cavs ended the season on a four-game winning streak including the championship game and they had seven games in which they allowed no goals. The Harvey girls were particularly dominant in games against HVAL rivals. In 12 HVAL games, they tallied 45 goals and allowed only nine. “We were dominating this season and did not lose or tie a league game at home,” Coach McDonough said.

The team’s greatest strength was its defense. Coach McDonough called it “outstanding.” He singled out Madison Boothe and Skye Watson for helping to shut down the attackers and for keeping the defense the team’s strong suit. Ninth grader Isolda Corena had a breakout season at goalie, finishing with 91 saves. Coach McDonough called her success “quite remarkable.”

The coach also praised the performances of Stella Ruiz-Vicente and Sophia Collum for making solid contributions on both defense and offense. “They were a huge help to only allowing nine goals,” said Coach McDonough who also praised the bench players for their contributions. “Every time they entered the game from the bench, they continued the momentum and energy that the starters had,” the coach said.

The top offensive player was Neave who led the team with 17 goals. She was an HVAL All-League selection, a Western New England Prep School Soccer Association (WNEPSSA) All-Star and an All-NEPSAC honorable mention. Senior Amani Carty and junior Mallon Gilligan tied for the most assists with five each. Carty earned HVAL All-League, All-NEPSAC, and was selected as a WNEPSSA All-Star.  Gilligan was named HVAL All-League. Also recognized as HVAL All-League were Rylan Gilligan, Skye Watson, and Mollie Weisberger. The Gilligan sisters, Rylan and Mallon, were both selected to the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association’s Junior All-Star team.

Coach McDonough said he is “incredibly proud of this group of girls.” He said, “From the first practice of the season until the last game, the girls gave it everything they had and 100% deserve this. It was a great way to send off the seniors and thank them for all they have done for the program. Their growth, both individually and as a team, has been something truly special to watch. They have responded to every challenge with determination and heart. The leadership shown by our upperclassmen helped set the tone, and our younger players rose to meet every expectation. The chemistry, positivity, and work ethic they brought every day made coaching them an absolute pleasure. I could not be more excited to see what the future holds for this team and this program.”

The team’s two coaches named the following players as recipients of the special team awards:

MVP Offense: Amani Carty

MVP Defense: Skye Watson

Most Improved Player: Isolda Corena

Cavalier Award: Sophia Collum

Varsity Coed Cross Country

Youth and Talent the Mark of the 2025 Team

Harvey’s varsity coed cross country team completed another fine season of competition this fall which saw many of the program’s athletes grow in their long-distance running skills and produced a league championship for the team’s top runner for the second consecutive season.

“Throughout the season, we saw the team grow, progress, and develop, highlighted by excellent individual performances at the end of the season, particularly at the HVAL Championship meet,” Coach Coscio said. At the league championship meet, Ally Zimmerman captured her second straight league championship and joined three other team members in earning All-HVAL honors. In addition, every runner set a season-best time at the championship meet.

The team has a fine young core with Zimmerman, a ninth grader, and a team captain leading the way, followed close behind by eighth grader Ella Adler, and sophomores Lilah Groff, also a team captain, and Sebastian Swindell among the boys on the squad..

“Our young athletes stepped up and became stronger runners and leaders to the others,” said head coach Christian Coscio. “Although it was one of the smaller and younger teams I’ve had since I began coaching at Harvey, the team was also one of the most dedicated,” Coach Coscio said.

The highlight of the season was Zimmerman’s winning the HVAL championship again followed up four days later with a fifth place finish in the New England Prep School Track Association championship race. Zimmerman’s varsity success impresses Coach Coscio. “Ally has already established herself as arguably the best female cross country athlete in Harvey’s history,” the coach said, adding, “Multiple championships, multiple all-league and all- conference honors, sub-20 minute 5ks -- she’s done it all and there’s still so much more to look forward to.”

Coach Coscio also singled out Adler and Groff for their successes this season. “It would be difficult to talk about one without the other, especially since they often finished one after the other in competitions,” the coach said. Adler finished sixth and Groff seventh in the HVAL championship meet, and in the NEPSTA Championship, Adler finished No.25 and Groff No.26, with both earning All-HVAL recognition and All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention honors.

Swindell was tops among Harvey’s boys this year. Coach Coscio is pleased with how much the sophomore improved. “Seb’s dedication and hard work consistently shone through, leading him to be a top-10 and all-league runner this season,” Coach Coscio said. “His development was a pleasant surprise for certain, and very helpful to other boys to see the results of putting in that level of effort,” the coach said, adding, “As the season progressed, the others worked to push themselves in the same way that Seb did throughout the season.”

The one disappointment Coach Coscio has about this season is that the girls did not have enough athletes to score, but other than that he feels the season was a success. In their two championship meets the boys finished fourth in the HVAL six-school event and 19th in the much larger regional NEPSAC title meet. In his final reflection, Coach Coscio said, “I was pleased to see the entire team continue to grow throughout the season and begin to find its identity.” He added, “I can truly say that at the end of the season, many of our athletes really understood what it meant to be not just a cross country runner but a Harvey Cross Country runner.”

Coach Coscio and his two assistants, Molly Feeney and Henry Baker, selected the following athletes for special team awards:

MVP: Ally Zimmerman

MVP: Sebastian Swindell

Most Improved/Top Newcomer: Noah Carlevarini

Cavalier Spirit: Ella Adler

Leadership: Lilah Groff

VarsityFootball2025-2026

Gridiron Grit and Cavalier Character

With impressive wins in their first two games, Harvey’s varsity 8-man football team looked well on their way to having a second straight special season, but the Cavaliers faced some very stiff competition in the remaining games and came up short from having a winning record.

Harvey entered the 2025 season as the reigning champion of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) 8-Man Football League, and head coach Kyle Delaney ’04 and assistants Rob Griffin, Joe O’Connell ’16, and Tom Smith ’16 were hoping to see their team have a shot at retaining their NEPSAC league crown. The Cavs opened the new season with a 26-6 victory at home over the Pomfret School Griffins from Pomfret, Connecticut. Fruitful Results in a Growing Season

It was a season of many close encounters for the Harvey Middle School volleyball team in 2025 as the girls got a good glimpse of what interscholastic competition entails. Their great effort did not result in victories but their competitiveness was on full display in each of their matches.

“Even if the results read 0 wins, it is worth mentioning that every set we lost, we lost by no more than a max difference of five points,” said head coach Octavia Man. ”The girls played hard and fought for every point, and they stayed committed to being positive and supportive of each other,” Coach Man added.

The coach liked the work ethic of the team, especially in trying to get strong in the all-important skill of serving. “Every single player worked extremely hard to improve their serve,” Coach Man said. The coach singled out eighth grade team captain Carmen Perez as having the  best serve followed by fellow eighth graders May Dong and Ruby Cayer. Coach Man said some of the team’s serves would have made the sports highlight reel. She said Perez and Cayer, along with eighth grade captain Brydie Groff, seventh graders Sam Doughty, Sabine Weiss, and Catalina Dragan, and sixth grader Daphne Davidson, all made outstanding saves to help the team get the score closer and put important points on the board.

Coach Man also saw marked improvement in the team’s passing skills as the season went on. “Toward the end of the season our passing game became more organized and more confident as the players started to trust their teammates’ abilities more and more.” the coach said.

In her final reflection on the season, Coach Man pointed out that piling up wins is not what middle school athletics is all about. “Even if we didn’t succeed in having a winning season, I think the most important thing is that the girls improved their volleyball skills overall and had a good time along the way,” Coach Man said, adding, “I would like them to know how proud I am of their work and effort and that they should keep playing and working hard and the results will show.”

At the end of the season Coach Man and her assistant Coach Stephanie Metz selected the following players for special team awards:

All-Star: Brydie Groff

Rising Star: May Dong

Most Improved: Sam Doughty

Bravest Defender: Daphne Davidson

Small But Mighty: Sabine Weiss

Heart of the Team: Carmen Perez

Best Effort: Ruby Cayer

Good Sport: Catalina Dragan

A Spirited Season of Soccer

The Harvey Middle School’s coed soccer team may have come empty in the victory column, but they certainly produced their fair share of highlights under first-year head coach Pasquale Ferrara and his assistant Kaitlyn Kavounas.

In the only match that ended in a tie, the young Cavaliers put in a dominant first-half performance during the team’s Spotlight Game vs. Rye Country Day School. Harvey broke the ice in the first half to go up 1-0. Co-captain Millie Rosenman scored the vital goal on her return from injury. The eighth grader’s goal was assisted by seventh grader Logan Brokenbaugh who started the game in an unfamiliar midfield position due to team injuries. The Cavs held the slim 1-0 lead into the second half before the Wildcats scored to tie the match. The two teams remained tie until the final whistle. Logan, himself, produced outstanding moments in the season. He showcased his goal-scoring skills in games against Eagle Hill and Oakwood Friends with hat tricks, on his way to being the team’s top scorer with 12 goals.

Another highlight involved a just miss by seventh grader Elias Hajem against French American. Elias had almost scored a free kick from far out but a slight deflection and fingertip save from the goalkeeper forced the ball onto the corner of the crossbar.

Sixth grader Finnegan Wood made the highlight reel with several stellar performances as the goalkeeper, making multiple saves in each game. In the away game at Rippowam Finnegan made one particular save where he parried the ball around the post after a long-range shot came his way. Coach Ferrara called Finnegan “one of our top performers.” The coach added, “Finnigan faced and saved many shots each game, keeping his concentration regardless of the scoreline.”

One highlight produced by the entire team came during the Spotlight Game against RCDS. The Cavaliers showed great sportsmanship when the opposing goalkeeper went down. They put the ball out of play and checked in on the injured player.

Coach Ferrara said Elias Hajem most embodied the Cavalier spirit with his tireless displays, often playing for the duration of the whole match in multiple positions to help out the team in the best way possible.

The coach also gave a shout-out to the defensive players -- Phoenix Goldstein, Dangoon Kang-nation, Blake Pylypshyn, Hunter Rogers, and Owen Veach and singled out the players on offense, midfielders Owen Wood, Morgan Serebin, Elias Hajem, and Sam Henick, and the attackers Millie Rosenman, Wayden Ebanks, Logan Brockenbaugh, and the team’s other captain  Ben Fierro-Wolf.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Ferrara shared his pride in how the team continued to grow game by game. He said, “Despite some tough results, the players continued to remain positive and seek motivation to achieve better results.” He said, “The team showed determination in every game, chasing down every ball and seeking goal-scoring opportunities until the final whistle.” Coach Ferrara appreciated the team’s spirit, saying, “The way that every goal was celebrated showcased the positive attitude and the Harvey Cavalier Spirit.”

At the end of the season Coach Ferrara and Coach Kavounas announced the following players as recipients of special team awards:

MVP: Logan Brockenbaugh

Most Improved: Finnegan Wood

Coaches Award: Millie Rosenman

Cavalier Award: Elias Hajem

Discovering the Joy of Running

The Harvey Middle School cross country team made great strides by season’s end. Guided by head coach Doug Plaskett and assistant Alison Nokes, the middle schoolers enjoyed running in the great outdoors all season long.

Coach Nokes said the athletes discovered that doing cross country has its perks when their school has a bucolic campus ideal for long distance running. “The kids had a fun time learning more about running and enjoyed running our campus practice route,” Coach Nokes said, adding, “And they were excited to see themselves grow faster and gain stamina.”

Eighth grader Reed Zarkowsky enjoyed his season. “I'm really happy I did it,” Reed said. “I got a lot better at running and definitely gained more stamina,” he said.

For Coach Plaskett, two highlights stood out for him – “hosting a meet at Harvey and watching all the kids get faster as the season went on.”

To show their appreciation to the runners and to recognize their growth, coaches Plaskett and Nokes gave each team member a medal and a certificate of participation. “We look forward to having these kids come back next year and get even better at the sport,” Coach Plaskett said.
