Varsity Boys Notch a League Win
Harvey’s boys varsity soccer team earned its second victory of the season Tuesday, Oct. 5, with a 5-1 win over the visiting Williams School. Once again, captain Clayton Collum and sophomore Luca Vega led the Cavaliers on offense with two goals apiece.
Just two minutes into the game Harvey was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards from the goal. Collum played a ball to the back part of the box where Luis Felipe Breidenbach one-touched it across the goalmouth to Vega for the first goal. After squandering a few splendid opportunities, the Cavs added a second goal in the 21st minute. After a turnover, Harvey midfield captain Keenan Kheirolomoom played a well-placed ball that split the defense and gave Collum a breakaway.
Williams responded quickly with their own goal at the midpoint of the half. When the Cavs pushed forward, they were caught several times in bad defensive shape. Harvey goalkeeper Charlie Hildebrandt made several big saves to keep the lead intact. Eventually, the Cavaliers found their footing and added a third first-half goal in the 34th minute. After earning a corner kick, Collum lofted a ball to the far side of the box where freshman Johan Kass volleyed a shot past the keeper. The half ended with a 3-1 lead for Harvey.
After another lull in play during the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Cavs found better ball movement. As the pressure on the Williams defense mounted, Collum put the game away in the 69th minute on another breakaway that he created for himself. Harvey added a final goal late in the game when Christophe Conoscente found Vega for his second strike. As a result, many of the younger members of the team and substitutes got a chance to play meaningful minutes.
With the win, Harvey improves to 2-4 on the season and goes 2-1 in the HVAL. The Cavaliers next play a home match Oct. 15 against another league rival, Master's of Connecticut.
