Diversity Dialogues

Dear Harvey Community,

Over the past weeks, Harvey’s leadership team has been grappling with how we can be an active agent of systemic change. We have also closely followed the BlackAt social media posts from independent school students and alumni across the country. While to date a similar site has not appeared at Harvey, we fully realize that our students and alumni could likely share parallel stories of their experiences at the school. We are listening, learning, and thinking about how we can better foster a culture of inclusion and equity at Harvey.

To that end, we are working to develop a thoughtful and sustainable strategy that will support all of our community members, enhance understanding and cultural competence across the school, develop equity and social justice leaders, and touch on all aspects of school life.

One first step we are taking is to establish an open conversation with our community. We are launching Diversity Dialogues, a weekly forum led by our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee that will invite members of our community to engage in open discussions around a range of issues related to diversity and inclusion. Each week will focus on a specific topic with the aim of building cultural awareness and understanding, increasing acceptance, and identifying specific personal and institutional steps to put words into action.

To kick off the series we are inviting alumni and current students of color to share their experiences and perspectives and identify concrete steps they would like to see Harvey take to better support our diverse student body. Our first Diversity Dialogue will be Tuesday, June 30th at 12:00 p.m. by Zoom. We invite alumni of color to join us for a frank discussion about their experiences at Harvey and discuss ways in which we can support students of color within our current school community, especially during these turbulent times. We will follow up soon with a similar session for current students of color and a schedule of other events in the series.

Furthermore, we dedicate ourselves to observing and celebrating the days of importance to the many cultures and groups within our school community. On that note, we recognize that today is Juneteenth, the oldest national celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. We encourage you to learn more about the importance of Juneteenth to the Black community.

We thank you for partnering with us for this important work and making our community stronger in the process. To register for the Diversity Dialogue for alumni of color on Tuesday, June 30th, please email equity@harveyschool.org

Sincerely,

Bill Knauer
