Student Support

We recognize that all students learn differently.

Our learning environment prioritizes small class sizes and meaningful teacher-student relationships in which every student can become an independent, successful learner and achieve their highest academic potential within our academic program. We recognize that neurodivergent learners may need additional support to be successful. That's why getting to know each student and understanding their strengths and opportunities for growth is central to our teaching approach.

All students are expected to take a full load of college preparatory classes including a world language. We do not modify assignment or assessments in a way that would fundamentally alter the curriculum.

LEARNING SPECIALIST

Our learning specialists provide resources to assist neurodivergent learners with strategies to meet the academic standards we hold for all students to become independent, lifelong learners. They may also recommend classroom strategies and specific school-approved accommodations to implement for student support.

We have found that students do well at The Harvey School when:

  • The relationship between the school and the family is open and collaborative.
  • Students self-advocate.
  • Learning issues are mild to moderate and/or previously remediated.
  • Students can fully pursue our challenging college-prep curriculum.

Examples of reasonable accommodations (based on appropriate documentation) may include:

  • Extra time on tests
  • Preferential seating
  • Use of calculator / use of computer
  • Use of audiobooks

Student Support Team

Both Middle School and Upper School have a multidisciplinary Student Support Team (SST) that meets weekly to assess the academic, social, and emotional progress and well-being of students.

SST is designed to support students both by anticipating issues, preventing them from occurring, and providing interventions and/or resources when issues arise.

Each team includes a learning specialist, school counselor, and other administrators, faculty, and staff.

STUDENT COUNSELING

The primary goal of our counseling department is to uphold a positive and supportive environment for learning and personal growth. With a multidisciplinary approach, our counseling department provides social and emotional instruction, support, and guidance that bolsters each student's ability to experience success at The Harvey School. The counselor also consults with parents about developmental, behavioral, and emotional issues that affect student progress and the well-being of the community at large.

The counseling department:

  • Provides student support and coaching.
  • Consults and collaborates with teachers and advisors.
  • Coordinates with outside mental health professionals.
  • Supports families in crisis.

ADVISORY PROGRAM

Students in class

The advisory program is built upon the Harvey experience.  Beginning in middle school, students are paired with advisors based on academic and personal interests and meet weekly in small mixed-grade level groups throughout the academic year. Students can discuss social and emotional topics, ask questions, consider personal concerns or challenges, and review their academic progress.

The advisory program seeks to ensure that students have at least one faculty member who serves as the primary contact and mentor for that student as well as develops social and academic skills through collaboration with teachers and administrators. Advisors also regularly communicate directly with families.

Students come to see their advisors as trusted mentors to whom they can turn for anything that is on their minds.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY SKILLS

All sixth grade students are enrolled in a study skills program that meets multiple times a week to support organization, time management, assessment strategies, and other skills that ensure students successfully transition into middle school.

Every middle school student also has a study hall in their academic schedule, proctored by teachers. This provides a valuable opportunity for students to complete homework and connect with teachers for extra help.
