Ninth Grade Common Ground
The first year of high school is a time for students to begin to build an understanding of their place in the natural world, the Harvey community and beyond, and the interconnected landscape of learning.
Through the elements of science, literature, the arts, and history, this interdisciplinary course for ninth graders gives them the opportunity to experience, question, and create through collaboration, communication, inquiry, and reflection - all foundational skills for academics and community.
A big part of our Common Ground course seeks to get students to recognize the intersection between the natural and human-made components of their community.

Students spend a lot of their class time outdoors, whether its exploring Harvey's expansive 125-acre wooded campus or taking field trips to Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco, NY for a day of outdoor education, volunteering, and orienteering, or visiting the "Sonic Innovations" exhibit, a series of sound art pieces that combine natural and human-made elements at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, NY.
