Harvey School News

The Harvey School’s athletics department has announced the selections for the top male and female student-athletes of the winter term. Getting the honor are two juniors, Olaf Gorski of the basketball team and Katie McCulloch of the ski team. Each not only enjoyed an outstanding athletic season but also earned a Cavalier Scholar certificate for achieving a grade-point average of 4.0 or higher.

Olaf, an international student from Poland, played a primary role in helping the boys varsity basketball team capture both the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) and the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championships. The starting center in his first year at Harvey grew to become a force under the basket as the season moved along. Named as the team’s most improved player by his coaches, Olaf led the team in rebounds and blocked shots. He went on to earn postseason honors as HVAL All-League as well as All-NEPSAC.

Olaf's basketball coach Denis Arnautovic offered high praise for his player’s achievement. “I'm extremely proud of Olaf for receiving the scholar-athlete award,” Coach Arnautovic said, adding, “Olaf exemplifies everything Harvey and our community stands for.”

Varsity ski team action

The winter’s top female student-athlete, Katie McCulloch, was the captain of the varsity ski team and its MVP. Her team coaches also honored her leadership, dedication, and sportsmanship with the Cavalier Award. Katie was one of the team’s two skiers who finished in the top 10 to score points for the Harvey squad. She produced the team’s best result this season when she placed second in the season’s fourth race against racers from participating schools in the Berkshire Hudson Ski League.

Ski team head coach Simon Leibovic was very pleased to learn of  his captain’s selection. “Katie demonstrated excellent leadership, and her maturity provided her teammates with a great example to follow,” Coach Leibovic said, adding, “She not only performed well during the ski races, but also served as a shining representative of The Harvey School with her displays of sportsmanship and positivity.”

In making the announcement of the winter’s top student-athletes, athletics director Ray Lacen said, “Olaf and Katie are most deserving of this recognition. They are two very fine young people who excel in both sports and academics.”
