Ryan Byrne '25 and Casey Kelly '26 have been selected as the Top Student-Athletes of the Spring Term. In making the announcement this week, Harvey’s Director of Athletics Ray Lacen said, “Ryan and Casey have performed admirably in both their academics and in their sports this spring and are well-deserving of the honor.”
Ryan, who has made the head’s list in his studies, had a breakout season in varsity lacrosse this spring. He scored 35 goals and collected 18 assists, finishing the season second on the team in goals and third in assists.
“Ryan's hard work throughout the year helped lead his team to a consecutive undefeated HVAL regular season and another season of 12 wins,” said lacrosse head coach Mike Scarsella. Coach Scarsella said Ryan was supportive of his teammates and took on a leadership role within the offense. “He is a person of high character and sportsmanship,” said Coach Scarsella, adding, “I can't think of anyone more deserving of the scholar athlete award for the spring term.”
Casey Kelly, an honor roll student and a captain on the girls varsity rugby team, helped lead her teammates to a 9-4-1 record in 7s matches. Selected by her coaches as the team’s Most Valuable Player on offense, Casey was second in tries scored and first in points made on conversion kicks. Girls rugby coach Maddy Visintainer called Casey “an integral part of our team.” Coach Visintainer said, “Casey is a committed and serious athlete, often taking it upon herself to do work outside of practices to improve.”
Mr. Lacen pointed out that both Ryan and Casey played a sport in each term, which, he said, ‘demonstrates their strong commitment to academics and athletics.”
