Sixteen students of The Harvey School’s Japanese language program nominated by Harvey Japanese language teacher Tim Cornell were inducted into the Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS) Tuesday, April 15. The JNHS recognizes and encourages achievement and excellence in the study of the Japanese language and culture. The American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) administers the society, and membership is recognized as a national achievement. The Harvey students are part of a group of more than 1,000 high school students who are inducted into the JNHS every year out of the more than 40,000 students currently enrolled in Japanese programs throughout the U.S.
Students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 after the first semester of their second year of Japanese study and must have an overall GPA of over 3.0 at the time of nomination to be inducted into the JNHS. These outstanding students of the Japanese language should be commended for their motivation and perseverance, not to mention their determination to study this challenging language. Students nominated for membership receive Certificates of Excellence and are recognized on the AATJ website.
In this increasingly global society, students need to move beyond a monolingual perspective and immerse themselves in understanding the language and culture of another country.
“I am so proud of these students,” stated Cornell Sensei, looking forward to their continued growth as students with a passion and love for the Japanese language and culture. “Who knows where their language journey will take them once they leave Harvey, but I hope that their study of Japanese will help prepare them for an increasingly interdependent world that will need leaders like these students to be involved in international dialogue to address the international problems of tomorrow. I hope that the study of Japanese helps them in this journey in some small way,” added Mr. Cornell.
