The Harvey community flocked to this year's Senior Bridge Expo with excitement to discover what the Class of 2023 has learned through extended study and research for their Independent Learning Projects.

Held on the evening of March 2 for their families, and holding another expo session during the academic day March 3 for their peers, seniors presented their individual projects and answered questions about their process. Families, faculty, staff, and students enjoyed walking around the expo at both sessions, marveling at intellectual curiosity and originality of the projects.

Each senior finds a faculty member to serve as their on-campus mentor for their project, devoting weeks to investigating their focus of study which culminates in their presentation at the Senior Bridge Expo each year. The Senior Expo is one component of Harvey's required Senior Bridge class, where seniors use design thinking to develop and maintain an action plan to meet the academic and personal challenges of not only senior year, but in their preparation for the transition to college. Harvey seniors gain experience in designing their own road maps, and by allowing them the space to follow their own path, they gain greater personal growth and in-depth independent learning.

This year, our seniors taught us about fractal fundamentals, how to start a business, music production, oscillating chemical reactions, poetry, magic, upcycling clothes, painting landscapes and watercolors, American Sign Language, and special effects makeup. Seniors learned how to cook various types of foods and desserts, knit, make tote bags, snowboard, and play piano. Engineering, mechanical, and design skills were put to use in rebuilding a motorcycle and building guitars, a go-cart, and even a trebuchet - a type of catapult that uses a long arm to throw a projectile.
