Harvey Middle School students put their spelling skills to the test this January by participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. All middle schoolers were encouraged to take part in the competition, which was conducted over the course of the month during homeroom and facilitated by their advisors.

Students completed five rounds of spelling, with ten words per rounds, 50 words total, challenging themselves with increasingly complex vocabulary. At the conclusion of the preliminary rounds, the top ten spellers advanced to the finals, held on February 3.

“The top ten finalists had a great experience competing orally in front of the judges to determine the school winner,” said Dr. Metz, Dean of Middle School Academics.

The Top Ten finalists were: eighth graders Millie, Ella, Alana, Maximilian, and Morgan; seventh graders Sabine, Sam, Riley, and Izzy; and sixth grader Daphne.

The winning word of the competition was "magnanimous," correctly spelled by Izzy, who earned first place and will advance to the next round of the Scripps Spelling Bee. Harvey Middle School is officially registered with Scripps and uses their authorized materials and resources. Izzy will compete in the next round online at Harvey.

“The students had a fun time challenging themselves each round and learning the spelling of words they might not have been familiar with before the spelling bee,” Dr. Metz added. “Overall, it was a fun competition for middle school students to participate in.”

Good luck to Izzy as she represents Harvey in the next round!
