Students in the Middle School elective class Current Events traveled by train to NYC May 15 to visit 30 Rockefeller Plaza and NBC Studios. The class took a tour of NBC Studios, learned  about the page program and visited several different studios including the studios of "The Kelly Clarkson Show "and "Saturday Night Live." 

Students were excited to have lunch with "NBC News NOW" anchor Savannah Sellers and her executive producer, Sean Reis. 

Ms. Sellers also co-hosts “Stay Tuned,” NBC News’ flagship Gen Z news program on Snapchat, and reports as a correspondent across NBC News. Ms. Sellers received an Emmy for her documentary work as a producer on the “NBC Nightly News” series “Hooked: America’s Heroin Epidemic” and the 2022 Gracie Award for Online Video Host.

Mr. Reis has worked on various shows at NBC News, including 21 years at the "Today Show," and is a multiple Emmy and Murrow Award winner.

Students had the rare opportunity to ask Ms. Sellers and Mr. Reis questions to learn more about their experiences in television news, and they were invited into the sound room during a live segment when Ms. Sellers was on air. Students learned about the history of NBC studios and the changes that have been made since it began in 1933. At the end of the experience, students created their own news broadcast video, and each person took on a different role in the production process. The final product showcased the overall experience in a fun and creative way. 

Our Middle School faculty thank Harvey parents Mark and Meghan French P’26, ‘28, for providing this opportunity for the Current Events class, as well as thanks to Jeannine Lavin who worked with Mr. French and helped set up the entire experience.

In our Current Events elective, students explore the events that are taking place in our ever-changing world and become familiar with relevant issues impacting our world. The class encourages students to broaden their perspective of the world in which they live and see themselves as global citizens.
