Students in Ms. Silverstein's Ethical Patient Care science elective recently welcomed a special guest from Support Connection, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing breast and ovarian cancer support. Patricia Phelan — a retired educator, cancer survivor, and peer counselor — shared her personal journey of survivorship, offering students an authentic and deeply moving perspective on the patient experience. Her visit helped bring to life many of the class’s key concepts, highlighting the importance of empathy, education, and advocacy in patient care.
Earlier in the fall term, students had volunteered at the annual Support-A-Walk fundraiser, witnessing firsthand the organization’s powerful impact within the community. Hosting Ms. Phelan in the classroom further deepened that connection, giving students the chance to ask thoughtful questions and explore how scientific learning translates into compassionate, real-world care.
