Read All About it

What better way to bring an epic story to life than by inviting the Harvey community to step inside it?

Over the summer, students in Ms. Hanf’s Honors English 9 class read a version of Homer’s The Odyssey to prepare for the start of the school year. On September 25, they transformed their reading and analysis into an immersive experience, inviting members of the Harvey community to journey alongside Odysseus and his crew inside Lasdon Theater.

Students became tour guides, creating scripts and exhibits to bring the audience into the story. Classroom Socratic seminars allowed students to analyze the text, discussing its characters, themes, conflicts, and symbolism before writing immersive scripts to bring their assigned locations to life.

Then, the project moved from the page into the art studio. Students collaborated with Mr. Price, one of Harvey’s wonderful Upper School art teachers, to design and create exhibits that complemented their scripts and helped transport visitors into the world of The Odyssey.

The result was a creative, interdisciplinary celebration of literature, art, performance, and storytelling. Many thanks to everyone who joined us on this epic odyssey!
