Varsity Softball: 2022 HVAL Champions
Harvey’s softball team rolled to its second consecutive HVAL title Wednesday, May 18, with a 17-1 victory at home against Westover in the league championship game. Having finished the season without a loss on their ledger, the Cavaliers played like the No. 1 seed they were going into the playoffs, combining dominant pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense.
Gaby Bonilla had another excellent outing, allowing one run on only three hits in the three-inning game the umpires awarded to Harvey by invoking the 15-run mercy rule. The sophomore ace struck out six and finished the season with a perfect won-loss record of 4-0.
Harvey totaled four hits and benefited mostly from the wildness of the Westover starting pitcher. Senior captain Erin Phillips led the offense with two hits and five runs batted in. Sophomore Grace Alpern was on base four times via walks. Senior Gaby Feldmeth had three RBIs and eighth grader Amani Carty knocked in a pair of runs.
Reflecting on her final season as softball coach, Amie Phillips said, “It's been a season of highs and lows. We started the season with 10 players, and then we dropped to nine before the first game, and finally we dropped to eight during the last two weeks. With the help of other athletes at Harvey, we were able to complete our season and ultimately be victorious. I wouldn't trade the season for anything, though. It was a great experience with the players and I appreciate all of the hard work and dedication the team had to finish out strong. We are humbled by the support our parents have given us throughout the season. I will miss coaching, but I am grateful to have coached so many amazing teams.”
Harvey won the league championship in 2019 and then held the title for two more springs when COVID-19 wiped out the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
