US RoboCavs Give a Good Showing in Texas
The Harvey Upper School RoboCavs took three robotics teams to the VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas the weekend of May 6-8. As testament to the strength of the school’s robotics program, Harvey had the most teams qualify for Worlds in the state of New York.
The three teams included 6277D, featuring seniors Giselle Groff, Henry Howe, Wendy Lichtenberg, and Alex Piper, along with junior Aden Yankwitt and ninth grader Logan Alexander. The seniors on 6277D were last year's New York State Champions and 2021 Vex World Champions with the Excellence award. They wrap up their robotics run at Harvey as the most successful team in the history of Harvey robotics, which has had its fair share of accomplishments over the course of its relatively brief but illustrious history.
The second team, 6277A, featured seniors Michael Arbetter and Josh Sestito while the third team, 6277C, was composed of sophomores Katie McCulloch and Julian Marin.
The teams all competed very successfully over the weekend, with 6277D being the only Harvey team to make it through qualifications and into the elimination bracket. With more than 800 teams vying for the elimination round and only 200 making it, getting a team from the Harvey program into this round was quite an accomplishment.
In the round of 16, team 6277D lost a nail-biter to the No. 4 seed. The RoboCavs had the match won, but then in the last seconds, their teammates slipped off the parking ramp and Harvey was out.
“We couldn’t be more proud of our teams,” said Harvey coach John Wahlers.”They represented Harvey with pride and great sportsmanship,” Mr. Wahlers said. He added, “ The fact that we came within an inch of advancing to the final eight in our division speaks volumes to the commitment, time, and energy our students put into the program.”
Mr. Wahlers also acknowledged the strong parental support the teams got from Mrs Yankwitt, Mrs Alexander, and Mr Lichtenberg and Mrs. Lazarus.
The teams celebrated an awesome performance with a night out at TopGolf with their good friends, the Kennedy Gaels from Somers, N.Y.
