Harvey Wins 2022 HVAL Baseball Championship

The Harvey Cavaliers are repeat HVAL baseball champions. Harvey, undefeated in regular season games against league opponents this season, made it a complete season sweep with an 11-3 victory at home Saturday, May 21, against Forman in the championship game of the HVAL  playoffs.

The Cavaliers were true to their form, one that saw them dominate once again with good pitching, a potent offense, and solid defense, although one lapse in defense in the top of the sixth gifted Forman two runs, the most runs the Cavs had allowed in any game against an HVAL rival this season. Harvey was leading 8-1 when the Lions scored two runs to cut the Cavs’ lead to five runs. Harvey, however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

The story in this game was the dominant pitching of senior Chris Marlin, named the MVP of the game who got the complete-game victory, allowing only two earned runs on only three hits. He struck out 14 Lions. “Chris has been all we could’ve imagined this whole season on the mound,” said an elated head coach Luis Lopez. “Chris was unbelievable,” the coach added.

Marlin was also a solid contributor on offense, stroking two hits, knocking in a run, and stealing a base. Six other Cavs had two hits each in the game. Leading the way was junior MJ Diaz who went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and a stolen base. "MJ’s two hits were clutch because they came with two outs,” Coach Lopez said, adding, “He’s a guy who could’ve easily been the MVP of the game.” Junior Justin Polanco was on base four times with two hits and two hit-by-pitches. He also stole four bases. Junior Jose Vasquez stroked two doubles, had two RBIs, and stole four bases. Senior Jeremy Sanchez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Junior Kirk Ortega had two hits, an RBI, and four stolen bases. Senior Jake Hellinger went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and ninth grader Max Hernández also chipped in a single.

“We’re super proud of our guys for accomplishing their goal of being champs,” Coach Lopez said. “The seniors definitely are leaving a legacy because now that they are back-to-back champions,” he said. “Every single young man on this team somehow chipped in to win this championship. When you think of how long our school has been in existence and we had never won a championship in baseball, but now we have won two in a row. It’s awesome to have led this group.“

Harvey finishes the championship season with 10 wins and four losses. The season is not completely over. The Cavs will host St. Luke's School Monday at 4 p.m. in the New England Small Prep School Tournament game.
