Dom D'Onofrio Signs to Play College Baseball
Senior Dominic D’Onofrio has signed his letter of commitment to attend Colby-Sawyer College this fall and play baseball for the NCAA D-III Chargers of New London, New Hampshire.
The Harvey athletics department hosted a ceremony Monday, May 23, to celebrate Dom’s signing. He was grateful for the gesture and pleased to share the moment with people who have assisted him in his baseball pursuits. “The signing was amazing to be surrounded by the people who helped get me to that table – my parents, coaches, Mr. Lazzaro, Mr. Knauer, and Mr. Lacen,” Dom said. “I have so much gratitude for my whole Harvey experience,” he added.
It’s been a memorable senior year for Dom on Harvey’s baseball diamond with the team having captured the HVAL championship and getting a postseason invitation to play in the Small Schools Invitational Tournament. Dom credits Harvey head coach Luis Lopez, a former major leaguer, and assistant coach, Gary Dunn, who played D-I college and semi pro baseball, with providing outstanding instruction. “It’s great to have been coached by guys who know the game, are talented and know where we have all been as players and young men and where we want to go,” Dom said.
Coach Lopez, who has known Dom since he was 10 years old, was proud to see his player take his game to the college ranks. “The percentage is very small for high school players to move onto the next level and now Dom is part of this special brotherhood,” Coach Lopez said, adding, “Like I tell all my seniors, now the real work begins.”
The left-handed throwing Dom, who pitched and played first base for Harvey, says Colby-Sawyer, which competes in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), plans to use him solely as a pitcher.
With his final game playing for Harvey now in the books, Dom looks to his future with some mixed emotion. “It is bittersweet. Sweet in the sense I’m very excited to be part of a team at Colby-Sawyer. It is a dream come true to play at the college level. Since the day I set foot on Harvey’s field in sixth grade, this was my goal. And the bitter part is I know my time with my teammates now will come to an end. My teammates are my friends for life.”
In terms of his academic pursuits, Dom plans to double major in forensic psychology and legal studies with a plan to earn his law degree in five years through one of Colby-Sawyer’s partner schools in an assurance program.
