Alum Brings Ice Hockey In Harlem Campers To Harvey
Harvey Summer Camp welcomed the Ice Hockey In Harlem (IHIH) campers to campus during the last week of July. The 30 campers, ages 5-17, worked on their ice hockey skills at Evarts Rink and also enjoyed the entire Harvey campus, playing games on the athletic fields, hiking through the campus woods, playing floorball in the Fenstermacher Athletic Center, and cooling off in the outdoor swimming pool.
This partnership also brought back Harvey alum Malik Garvin '11, who was once an IHIH participant as a child and is now the program’s director. Garvin began skating as a 4-year-old in Harlem and developed his skills through IHIH and later as a member of Harvey's varsity ice hockey team.
After graduating from Harvey in 2011, Garvin went on to play NCAA Division III men's ice hockey at Western New England University where he earned a BS in Accounting and Finance. Garvin was also the first program director for Bronx Lacrosse, a year-round lacrosse program with academic standards at a public school.
“The IHIH experience at Harvey was amazing, with 30 kids having a unique and memorable summer camp experience,” Garvin said. ”We can’t wait to do it again next year,” he added.
Harvey alumni relations associate Greg Janos ’98 was pleased to see Garvin return to his high school alma mater in the capacity as IHIH’s program director. “My role was to welcome Malik as an alumni and his organization and make sure they had what they needed,” Janos said. ”I couldn't help but check on them throughout the day and I saw how excited his young players were at Harvey doing so many fun things,” he added.
Also instrumental at IHIH is former Harvey parent Todd Levy, the co-founder and chairman of its board of directors.
Two rising seniors and members of the Harvey varsity ice hockey team, Daniel and Spencer, volunteered to work with the campers all week long.

Passersby on Route 22 the past two weeks near the entrance to The Harvey School may have had to look twice to make sure they saw what they saw … a herd of goats traversing the school’s 125-acre campus, but the 33 goats are indeed there, making their way to munch on much of the invasive vegetation as part of a special initiative of the Bedford 2030 in partnership with the school.
