Senior Lucas Chirico to Play D1 Rugby

Harvey senior Lucas Chirico will be playing Division 1 rugby this fall for St. Bonaventure University. Lucas, a four-year member of Harvey’s rugby team, has signed his letter of intent to attend St. Bonaventure where he is expected to play forward for the Bonnies’ varsity program. He has served the Cavaliers mainly as the prop on the front row, providing stability at the scrum and making his presence felt in the rucks.

A former captain and president of St. Bonaventure’s rugby team in the early 1990s, Harvey’s Head of Upper School and current rugby coach Phil Lazzaro is pleased to see one of his ruggers play for his college alma mater.

“Lucas is a dedicated student-athlete who has worked hard on becoming a better rugby player,” said Mr. Lazzaro, adding, “He’s got great hands for a forward and loves contact.” He expects Lucas to be a forward in the nationally ranked St. Bonaventure rugby program. Mr. Lazzaro praised Lucas for being “a positive teammate and mentor to new rugby players.”

Lucas is looking forward to getting the chance to play for the Bonnies. "I’m excited about next season and hope to make a positive impact and develop more throughout the next level,” he said. Lucas credits his years at Harvey with helping him to achieve success. “Harvey taught me how to get my priorities straight and focus on my end goal, which is to be the best at whatever I choose to do,” he said.

Lucas and his parents were on hand Wednesday when Harvey hosted a ceremonial signing of his letter of commitment to attend St. Bonaventure and play rugby for the university located in Allegany, New York.
