Girls Volleyball (4-5): A Tale of Teamwork and Effort
Coaches Deb Matero and Carolyn Bean enjoyed seeing the girls on their Middle School volleyball team grow leaps and bounds in their knowledge of the sport and in their level of skill through the course of the season.
Highlights include a season-opening 2-0 win at home against Chase, which came when the Harvey girls, after winning the first set easily, held off the visitors in the nail-biting second set, 25-23. In another exciting home game, the young Cavs, after losing to Masters by a large deficit in the first set, came back to sweep the next two sets and take the match, 2-1. At one point in the season, the Harvey squad won back-to-back games, first beating Rippowam-Cisqua 2-0 at home in two hard-fought sets and then outlasting the visiting Bi-Cultural Day School squad 2-1.
The coaches were very pleased with the effort the girls gave this season. “Coach Matero and I were very proud to see the whole team improve and make some great strides in teamwork and communications,” Coach Bean said.
At the end of the season, the coaches handed out team awards to the following players:
MVP Offense: Iliana Hellinger
MVP Defense: Emily Sorio
Most Improved Player: Anna Bellinson
Sportsmanship: Maeve Lazzaro
Coaches Award: Helena Kasarda
Coed Soccer (2-7): A Season of Close Encounters
The Harvey Middle School coed soccer team, guided by coaches Michael Fink and Stephanie Metz, played much better than its record, staying competitive in nearly all its matches.
Luca Vega led the squad in goals, but also provided fantastic all-around play and leadership on and off the field. Jared Effinger, a staple of the team’s offensive attack, contributed several goals as well. Ryan Byrne brought his soccer knowledge to the team and notched a couple of goals himself. Jonathan Bailey and Nolan Chester-Weiner also joined in on the scoring for the Cavaliers. Rounding out the offensive attack were Jordan Collins and Vincent Miller.
The team was anchored by solid goal play from Matt Egelberg and stout defense, including Ryan Dey, Cade Gilligan, Peter Hill, Teddy Clement, Peter Sorio, Felix Oliver, Terrell Raynor, and Charlie Carpenter, who proved capable as a goalie.
Coach Fink said Nick Ritenis showed "remarkable growth in his knowledge of the sport throughout the season." The coach also praised the team's only girl. "Sophia Collum not only held her own as the lone female representative of the team but also never shied away from any challenge on the field," Coach Fink said.
“The Cavaliers are well-positioned to have a successful soccer season next year,” said Coach Fink.
At season’s end the coaches gave out special team awards to the following players:
Coaches Award - Luca Vega
Sportsmanship - Sophia Collum
Most Improved - Nick Ritenis
MS Cross Country: Running with Purpose
The Middle School cross country team had a fine season, capped off by a good showing in the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Championship meet in November. Under the guidance of coaches Doug Plaskett and Austin Morgan, the Harvey boys worked hard to improve their times as the season progressed.
The top team highlight came in the FAA meet at Hackley when two Harvey runners placed in the top 10. Team captain Charlie Hill finished seventh and eighth-grader Spencer Hindle took the No. 10 spot. Sixth-grader Micah Berni finished the race in 20th place with eighth-grader William Fenton not far behind at No. 26. Another highlight was the individual success of Hill who finished No. 5 overall among eighth-graders in the league and never placed below 10th in any of his meets.
In addition to the accomplishments of Hill, Coach Plaskett singled out the overall contributions of Berni, Fenton, Hindle, and Matt Rankin.
The coaches gave special postseason team awards to the following runners:
