Harvey’s Middle School robotics team qualified for the state tournament Saturday, Feb. 11, when sixth-grader Clayton Collum and seventh-grader Wendy Lichtenberg placed eighth out of 40 teams by scoring 36 points in the final match at the VEX IQ Challenge at East Rockaway High School on Long Island.
Harvey and a seventh-place team from a second school paired up for what would turn out to be a highly dramatic final match
Harvey watched as the next group to go did not score the bridge bonus, keeping Clayton and Wendy in first place. When a team in the next round scored 46 points, Harvey found itself in second place. Whether Clayton and Wendy could hold on to second place came down to the final match. With seconds to go and Harvey’s fortunes in jeopardy, Clayton and Wendy watched both robots of the competing teams fall off the bridge, which then locked up second place for Harvey.
Harvey coach Sam Schursky said the team was disappointed it didn’t win but “ecstatic that they qualified for the state tournament in Massapequa March 4.” Meanwhile, the team will be not be resting on their laurels. ”We have ideas and improvements to make as we head into the next few weeks,” said Mr. Schursky.
The Middle School team will have company when they make the trip to Massapequa in March as two Harvey Upper School teams also qualified for the state tournament
