The Harvey School’s robotics team is now six for six in tournament competitions this year.
The RoboCavs kept their remarkable winning streak alive Saturday, Feb. 4, when they captured the title of tournament champion at the VEX iDesign Freeport Robotics Qualifier at Freeport High School on Long Island.
Seniors Josh Bloom and Mike Ecker, along with junior Justin Tebbutt, entered as Harvey’s team 6277B, and earned their third tournament championship of the season to help the RoboCavs win their sixth straight title overall.
The finals pitted Bloom, Ecker and Tebbutt (photo right) and their partners, the Iron Giants from STEM High School, against Harvey’s team 6277A and their partners from The Masters School from Dobbs Ferry. Although losing in the finals, team 6277A went on to win the highest individual award at the tournament, the Excellence Award, which goes to the team that had the best design combined with outstanding performance in the tournament and in individual skills competition. Team 6277A (photo bottom right) featured seniors Ryan Hurst, Janice Cai and Hunter Hoffman subbing for Jarrod Waner, who was out with the flu.
The RoboCavs hope to make it seven titles in a row Saturday, Feb. 11, when they compete in the iDesign East Rockaway Vex Qualifier. The team then stays home to compete when Harvey hosts a state qualifier contest, Saturday, Feb. 18.
