MS Debate Team Makes a Winning Argument

By Cody Seigel, Harvey Student, Grade 8

On Saturday, December 2 the Middle School Debate team traveled to the West End Secondary School in New York City, marking Harvey's second middle school debate tournament. The Debate team itself is taught by Mrs. Alexander (English) and Ms. Matero (English). The tournament had eight debaters from Harvey in three different debating groups. The groups traveled around the West End Secondary School debating against several others schools from the New York City Metropolitan area. Harvey, having the newest debate team, spent several hours weekly writing several rebuttals, propositions, oppositions, and research on topics such as the abolishment of the penny, questioning Amazon being good for society, the possibility of one year of American national service, and New York City banning single-use plastic bags.

The nonstop work stepped up Harvey's game for debate, with Harvey winning three debates out of nine hours of debating that day. Two out of three of Harvey's teams won at least one of their debates. One of Harvey's teams with the members Sam Alexander (grade 8), Gabriella Feldmeth (grade 8), and Marley Shyer (grade 7), won the opposition side for Americans being required one year of National Service, and the team with Wendy Lichtenberg (grade 8), Cody Siegel (grade 8), and Noam Cohen-Weinberg (grade 7) won two debates earning the most points for Harvey for the opposition side for the abolishment of the penny, and the opposition for Amazon being good for society. Wendy Lichtenberg (grade 8) earned the overall most points for Harvey. The eight hardworking debaters included Wendy Lichtenberg (grade 8), Cody Siegel (grade 8), Sam Alexander (grade 8), Gabriella Feldmeth (grade 8), Marley Shyer (grade 7), Scott Nicholson (grade 7), Noam Cohen-Weinberg (grade 7), and Jacob Weisberger (grade 7).

The Middle School Debate team will travel to their next debate competition on Saturday, January 20 at Nightingale Bamford School in NYC.
