The School believes that the Performing Arts “curriculum represents an arena within which students of all abilities can find success.”

The Middle School Arts program meets throughout the school year, rotating students, grouped by grade, through the areas of Theatre, Music and Studio Art. The eighth grade after school musical production has become the culminating Theatre/Music experience in the Middle School.

The Upper School curriculum includes classes in Music, Theatre, Dance and Film. Students have the opportunity to study acting, improvisation, music theory, music history, instrumental/voice lessons, film criticism, stagecraft and a variety of special topics in the performing arts. In addition, classes in dance are offered during the academic day. Chorus is also a full credit course, providing an opportunity for students studying voice. The Early Music Ensemble is a unique instrumental group that provides another chance for performance and music credit during the school day.

The after-school Theatre Program presents a number of productions per academic year, which include sets built and often designed by students under the guidance of the Technical Director. Each year a variety of genres are presented on stage including musicals, dramas, tragedies and Shakespearean plays. There is also the opportunity for student written works to be presented through a playwriting class offered by the English Department. The after-school program also includes dance classes that culminate in a concert presented in The Black Box Theatre.

Finally, the department works to align students with professional performing artists and companies in addition to scheduling regular trips to a variety of performances.
