10th Grade – Activities: Dance, Stage Managing, the Musical and One-Act Plays

My family and I were drawn to Harvey because of the strong emphasis on the arts and the small, tight-knit community. I came to Harvey in the 6th grade. I am now a sophomore, and my sister, Kiersten, is in 7th grade.

History and English are my favorite classes. Both classes are teacher-led discussions, providing each student with a chance to share his or her thoughts and ideas. This also encourages many student-led discussions, giving it the feel of a college class. Because we can select classes that best fit our interests and varying skill levels, I love all of my classes and am motivated to work twice as hard because it is something that I have chosen and am interested in. Whether it is getting advice or extra help, the teachers are always there when you need them and are happy to help.

For me, being able to participate in the speech and poetry contests has tremendously improved my self-confidence and public speaking skills. Also, choreographing for the dance recital has let me express myself and gain leadership skills. The performing arts programs allow you to take a role as a leader through opportunities such as choreographing dancers, writing and directing plays, and even composing and performing music.

Offering so many electives and opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, gives students the chance to experience and participate in the areas of interest in a pre-professional setting. No matter what level you are, beginner or advanced, there is always a spot for you and a chance to achieve.

Lunch is a great time to catch up with friends, squeeze in some last minute studying and meet with teachers for extra help. I can also schedule a music or voice lesson during my free periods.
